Welcome to the Jackson Journal, our professional journal focused on leading and training Soldiers in an Initial Military Training (IMT) operating environment. The intellectual and practical value of professional writing for publication as a means to improve critical thinking and encourage innovation, initiative, and action cannot be overstated. It is the best way to promote Army institutional and organizational learning by sharing ideas, best practices, and lessons learned with a vast audience of leaders.
In addition to the many informative articles in this issue of the Jackson Journal, I want you to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with Victory 6 Sends #1, which will give you a greater insight into my leadership philosophy and the fundamental expectations I have for all leaders within the US Army Training Center and Fort Jackson.
When I reflect on 30-years of thinking and writing about the attitudes and beliefs that shape who you are and how you develop subordinate leaders. I
am convinced a leadership mindset approaches problems as opportunities and recognizes that every challenge or setback provides an opportunity to learn and grow. My leadership philosophy is more about ‘how to think’ rather than ‘what to think’ and forms the basis of a leader development methodology focusing on mechanics that result in positive, measurable outputs.
The Jackson Journal is a platform for all IMT professionals to express their thoughts and concerns, start a dialogue, or better understand a specific topic or improve their professional development. I am especially pleased by the majority of articles submitted to this edition from our non-commissioned officers. You clearly demonstrated a mastery of this intellectual engagement. Your efforts bring a greater depth and perspective to issues the Army and IMT community are facing.
Our featured article in this issue of the Jackson Journal is “Mindfulness and Yoga in BCT: A Battalion Commander’s Perspective,” by LTC Daniel Rausch. In this article, LTC Rausch shares his experiences executing the Mindfulness and Yoga Pilot in 2-60th Infantry Regiment. He systematically lays out the impact this pilot program has on various training outcomes, including Soldier indiscipline, emotional regulation, mental toughness, graduation rates, injury rates, high-stress event performance, and attitudes that may increase BCT graduation rates.
1SG Robert Hordern shares some great insights and ideas in his outstanding article titled “Communication is Vital for Successful Platoon Leadership.” This article, centered on effective communication between a new platoon leader and platoon sergeant, is vital to the success of the platoon and organization—a must-read for all platoon leaders, company commanders, executive officers, and first sergeants. Finally, 1SG Shane Hill’s superb article “Time Management for Stress Management” discusses possible ways to reduce stressors in a Basic Combat Training environment.
I encourage all leaders to continue reading and contributing your thoughts and ideas to the Jackson Journal. I am especially interested in the views of our Drill Sergeants, First Sergeants, Platoon Leaders and
