enrichment stage of Army team building. They are focused on the developmental needs and accomplishments of the team, and its members, during collective and individual training events (Department of the Army, 2015).
Cadre members must be engaged and understand that these events can also cause strife amongst the team because of various weaknesses among the individual members that may cause them to fail. Cadre members must be there, for these moments of friction, to help guide their teams through these crucial developmental times. Cadre should identify both team and individual shortcomings. They should coach the Trainees through a collaborative approach that involves
the team and increases their cohesion by focusing on standard failures and improving their team’s diverse strengths versus blaming an individual member. Cadre members should also identify personal shortcomings and provide the specified training necessary to improve upon the individual’s weaknesses. By focusing on individuals equitably, we can increase the performance of the individual and strengthen the team.
This approach demonstrates to the individual we genuinely care about their development as a Soldier and a team member. The Trainee understands that he is a team member and they are a part of something larger than themselves. They truly begin to shed their layers of individualistic and selfish behaviors and embrace the Army culture, values, and norms. They do what is necessary because it is the right thing to do, and they place the team’s greater good over their own objectives and desires (Department of the Army, 2015). At this point, we have reached the sustainment stage of Army team building. We must keep in mind, however, that some may not reach this stage. Others may slide or revert to their
individualistic behaviors, and that’s ok. We will continue to maintain our steady approach to take care of their developmental needs and do our best to create an inclusive environment in which they have a strong desire to put the team’s needs above their own.
Cadre must balance the development of Trainees as a collective (solidify team building) and individually (to equitably address individual needs and enhance team capabilities). We must fully engage our Trainees with a multifaceted approach and ensure that we create an inclusive environment where they feel their needs are being taken care
of. We must also ensure that we set the example
for our Trainees and ensure they are creating the same inclusive environment by embracing the organization’s diversity and treating everyone with dignity and respect. We will teach our newest Soldiers and build teams by focusing on our strengths through diversity, developing our Soldiers equitably, and creating an inclusive environment that produces an intense desire to serve and succeed.
