6JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014BasicCombatrainingBCconsistsonumerousWarriortasksanddrillrequirementsthatSoldiersmustpasspriortograduating.TemostimportantskillthataSoldierleavesBCwithistheabilitytoqualiyandusetheirweaponinanygivensituation.Tisskillprovidesthemtheabilitytoreandmaneuverwiththeirweaponincombatineeded.SoldiersthatleaveInitialEntryrainingIEmustbeabletoghtthereoretheymustqualiyasariemanbeoretheygointocombat.DrillSergeantsunderstandtheimportanceothisskillbutdotheyreallyhavetheskillstogettheirSoldiersthereADrillSergeantwhohasbeenthroughtheperiodsoBasicRieMarksmanshipknowshowrustratingitcanbewithSoldiersthatjustcannotcomprehendthebasicundamentalsandconceptsoBRM.ForyearsSoldiersthatcouldnotgrasptheBRMundamentalsandconceptshavebeengiventhelabelohardcore.Tehardcoreistheprivatethatjustdoesnotunderstandmarksmanshiptheonewhohasallbutshutdownandisalmostbeyondhope.TatoneSoldierthatmostDrillSergeantswantnopartoorearolosingtheirsanity.Howevercycleafercyclehardcoreshootersqualiy.Normallytheyqualiyaferringrepeatedlyandaferringabasiccombatloadatzerotargets.TeonequestionthatneedstobeaskedinregardstotheseSoldiersisitheseSoldiershadzeroedtheirriecorrectlyduringperiodsourgroupzeroandveconrmzerowouldtheystillbeahardcoreshooteronqualicationdayTeanswermightbesurprisingorsomeabsolutelyNOTererswhodonotunderstandhowtoapplytheundamentalsomarksmanshipduringperiodsourandvemissoutonalmostallothetrainingvalueobasicriemarksmanshipperiodssixsingleseightmultiplesandninepre-qualication.Whatisworseisthatperiod7ES2onlycompoundsconusionitheyseesomesuccess.ItgivessomehopetoaSoldierjusttohaveitcrushedthenextdaywhentheygobacktotheirshoddyzeroandshootterribly.Whilethemajorityotraineesatleasthaveadecentzerobegintograspthecorrelationbetweenpointoaimandpointoimpactandworktoimproveuidityotheringprocesstoimprovespeedthehardcoreisstillscratchingtheirheadinregardstotheundamentals.Teyarerustrateddejectedandareprimarilythinkingaboutthelikelihoodonotgraduating.WhatisahardcoreshooterMydenitionoahardcoreisaSoldierwhohassignicantdecienciesinmorethanoneotheourSSGChadA.SageZeroingtheUnzeroable December2013-March2014JacksonJournal7undamentalsoriemarksmanship.TemajorityothetimethisSoldierwillnotbesuccessulwithoutindividualattentionandtrainingromaknowledgeabletrainer.ManyDrillSergeantsbegintocallwhotheirhardcoreswillbeontheveryrstdayogroupingzeroing.Teymayberight.TatSoldiermaybeanuisancethroughouttheperiodsoBRM.ConverselythatSoldiermayonlybeproblematicoradayortwootrainingitheyarecaughtearlyassignedtoaDrillSergeantwiththeskillandpatiencetoxtheirissuesandgiventhetimeandtrainingrequiredortheselectewknownashardcores.HowdowehandletheSoldierthatcannotgrasptheundamentalsomarksmanshipAthree-prongedattackisinorder.Onetherermustbeassessedordeciencies.Tisincludesissuesduringtheringprocessissueswiththerieandissueswiththerer.Tenextstepinthisattackiswheretheshotgroupanalysisbegins.Tissteptakesahealthydoseowalkingbackandorthtoretrievedisappointingresultsandtryingtocoaxthererintocorrections.Tirdthetrainermusthavethetoolsorthejob.Tisincludessomestandardtrainingaidsandsomeunorthodoxtechniquespickedupalongtheway.AssessingthefrerAcommonmiscueinshotgroupanalysisstemsromtheactthattherergoesgroupafergroupafergroupwithoutbeingobservedbythezeroer.TeshotgroupanalysisbeginswiththeinstructortrainerobservingtheSoldierwhilehereslookingorproperpositionaimtriggersqueezeandbreathing.ItgoesontospecicallysayCoachesshouldnotuseshotgroupanalysiswithoutobservingtherer.FM3-22.9LetsberealisticaDrillSergeantcannotobserveall4-8Soldiersthattheyareresponsibleoratanygiventime.Tatshouldnotkeepusromtakingeducatedguessesinshotgroupanalysis.HoweverwhenitcomestotheSoldierwhoisrepeatedlyhavinggrossissuesobservationothererandtheringTheUnzeroableprocessisparamount.Observationcanandshouldhappenrommultiplevantagepoints.Itshouldincludeobservationoallundamentalsbutextraattentionisrequiredinthesuspectedproblemareas.Keyinginonjusttheundamentalthatissuspectedcouldeasilyresultinotherproblemareasbeingoverlooked.Firstthingrsttherershouldbeobservedorasuitableposition.IsupportisusedproperlytheSoldiershouldbeabletorelaxmostohismusclesUsingmusclestosupporttheriecancausemuscleatiguewhichinturncausestheweapontomove.FM3-22.9Teeldmanualgivesanoverviewotheplacestokeyin.ReerencingthechecklistandoverviewopositioninRieMarksmanshipDiagnosticandrainingGuideisanothersourceoinormation.IwillcoverthemostcommonandproblematicareasIhaveencounteredinthelasttwoyears.Itypicallystartattheeetandmovetowardstherie.Idothisbecauseveryewissuesareoundinthelowerextremitiesandthemajorityotheissueshappenclosetotherieandthereareusuallymultipledecienciesinthisregion.NaturalpointoaimNPAisaregularawinhardcoresshooters.Teywiggleandwobbleintotheirpositionandbythetimetheyaresettheydonotevenlookcomortable.NaturalpointoaimisdenedbytheUnitedStatesArmyMarksmanshipUnitasthepointatwhichtheriesightssettlewheninaringposition.OnetoolorcheckingNPAistohavetherergetintopositionandthen 8JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014closetheireyes.Whentheyopenthemitheyareconsiderablyoftargettheyneedtoadjusttheirpositiontobeclosertoontargetnaturally.AnotherwaytoidentiyabadNPAiswhilewatchingtheSoldierreitherecoilotheriepullstheweaponofothetargetconsiderablytheNPAneedstobereacquired.SeeRieMarksmanshipDiagnosticandrainingGuideorabreakdownohowtoadjustarersNPAhigherlowerleorright.Anotherproblemareacommonlyobservedistheplacementothenon-ringhand.Tishandcanbeincorrectlyplacedinamyriadoways.Temostproblematicpositioningothishandisinbetweenthehand-guardsandthesandbagithehand-guardsarenotrestingonthesandbag.Tisdeeatsmostothebenetohavingthesupportintherstplace.Onapositivenotethisisoneotheeasiestissuestox.SimplyhavetheSoldierslidetheirentirebodyandriebackwardsacoupleoinchesandthenchecktheheightotheirsandbagstoensurepropersupport.Anotherwaytogoaboutxingthisistobeatapositionintothesandbagortheirhandtoliein.TisispreerableasitallowstheSoldiertostayinclosetothesupportandallowstheSoldiertheabilitytopintheriebetweentheirbodyandthesandbags.Anadditionalpoorplacementothenon-ringhandisonthemagazinewell.Althoughthisdoesnothaveatremendousimpactonringinthepronesupportedpositionthispoorpracticewillleadtourtherheadachesintheproneunsupportedposition.Rememberwearecoachingxingahard-coreheresoweneedtoxasmanyproblemsaspossibleasrapidlyaspossiblesoastogettoperectpractice.Teelbowsareathirdpointohighconcernwithournewrers.Althoughtheyhavealotmoreroomtoplaywithinregardstobeabletoreaccuratelyinthepronesupportedringpositionweshouldenorcegoodhabitswhilegroupingzeroingsothatwedonothavetospendmoretimewiththishard-corererwhenitistimetotransitiontotheproneunsupported.Aswellourpronesupportedpositionshouldmirrorourunsupportedpositionwiththeexceptionothemannerinwhichtherontotherieissupported.Teringsideelbowshouldbeplacedonthegroundandgenerallyinlinewiththeshoulder.Tereissomeroomtomoveinurtherinoroutbutitshouldbeincloseenoughtopromotegraspingthepistolgripcomortablyandhighonthegrip.Tenon-ringsideelbowisgenerallyomoreconcern.Oentimeourpoorershootersdonothavethiselbowontheground.Ortheyhaveitaroutsidetheirshoulderwhichleadstohavingapositionthatisartoolowandwillcripplethemduringunsupportedring.AquickxorthisissueopositioningtheelbowsinthepronesupportedpositionistoputtheSoldierintoagoodproneunsupportedpositionrst.Tenbuildupthesupportnexttotherersrie.Tiswillensurethattherieissupportedatthecorrectheightandhelporcetheshooterintoproperplacementotheelbows.Analareatospendconsiderabletimecritiquingisthepositionotheheadorcheek-to-stockweld.Youneedtoensurethattheriehasbeenbroughtuptotheheadinsteadotheoppositeandcheckingthattheheaddoesnotmoveorwardorbackwardinbetweenshotgroups.Youalsoneedtoconrmthattheheadisnotmovedaroundunnecessarilyinbetweenshots.Allothesearemistakesthatcancausesignicanterrororanewshooter.Eachiseasytospotaslongaswearewatchingourshootersinsteadojustanalyzingshotgroups.obegintoworkthisportionIalwaysensurethattheriebuttisintheshoulderpocketcorrectly.IaSoldiercannotseemtondthatsweetspothereisaquickcheck.HavetheSoldiergetintothepronesupportedposition.Tenwithoutmovingthenon-ringhandhavethererreachtheirringarmallthewayorwardsothatitisparalleltothehand-guards.NexttheSoldierslowlydrawstheirringarmtowardstheirbodytracingtheirhandalongthehandguardsuntilitcomestorestonthepistolgrip.Aslongastheelbowwasplacedonthegroundcorrectlytherershouldnowhavetherieinthepockettheringhand December2013-March2014JacksonJournal9inagoodhighgriponthehand-guardsandhavetheringsidealignedcorrectly.TeoneareathatmyDrillSergeantwasconstantlyocusedonwhileIwasinbasictrainingwasthecharginghandle.TeSoldiershouldbeginbytryingtotouchthecharginghandlewithhisnosewhenassumingaringposition.TeSoldiershouldbemindulohowthenosetouchesthecharginghandleandshouldbeconsistentwhendoingso.FM3-22.9Whatimyhardcoreis52andhasnochanceogettingtheirnosetothecharginghandleTisiswhereexperienceandvariedtechniquescomeintoplay.OnesuchtechniqueistodrawawhitelinewithaSharpieonthebuttstocksothattherercanjustbarelyseeitoutothebottomotheireye.AnothertechniqueistouseapieceomoleskinoraBand-AidtogivetheSoldiersomethingtoeelorwiththeirace.Athirdwouldbetohavethewarriorputupasetnumberongersextendedandjoinedinbetweenthecharginghandleandtheirnosetojudgethegapconsistently.Whenassessingthererpositionisnottheonlythingweshouldbecheckingandcorrecting.BreathcontrolisalsoveryapparentwhileobservingaSoldierretheirweapon.Ibelievethatweallknowthattheidealbreathingrhythmorareristoholdthebreathatthenaturalrespiratorypauseaferexhalation.HoweverhereisaactthatIdonotthinkweDrillSergeantsknowasawhole.Ariecanbezeroedperectlywellwhilebreathinginpausingandthenringorbreathinghalwayoutpausingandring.Yesitisnotidealbuthereismypoint-whenatrainerisobservingthebreathingoaSoldieritismoreimportantthattheSoldierpauseduringtheringprocessthanitisthatthebreathisheldisatthenaturalrespiratorypause.TeabsolutekillerinTheUnzeroabletheundamentalobreathcontroliswhenaSoldierneverholdstheirbreathduringtheprocess.ItheSoldiercontinuestobreathewhilegoingthroughtheringmotionthesightsandmoreimportantlytheriewillcontinuetomovethroughtheringprocess.LetustakealookatjusthowmuchthismaycosttheSoldier.Anyalignmenterrorbetweentherontandrearsightsrepeatsitseloreverymeterthebullettravels.Forexampleatthe25meterlineanyerrorinriealignmentismultiplied50timesFM3-22.9.SoitheSoldiercontinuestobreatheandtheriemovesjust110oaninchbetweenwhenthererisalignedandthetimethereractuallypullsthetriggeritcausesamisso5inchesromtheintendedpointoimpact.Teendstateisthattherermustholdtheirbreathduringtheringprocess.Preerablythishappensatthesamepointintheprocessandevenbetterwouldbeatthenaturalrespiratorypauseinthebreathingcycle.Simplywatchtheriseandallothewarriorsbackandmakenecessarycorrectionsuntilthererunderstandstheirdeciencies.Telastplacetoocusyourattentiononwhenassessingarerisinthetriggersqueeze.Tinkingabouttheaorementionedexampleojusthowmuchimpactaslightjerkcancauseitshouldbeelementarythattheriecannotmoveduringtheringprocess.Alotothemovementthathappenstoahard-corerertendstobeinjerkingthetrigger.Temanipulationothetriggercanbesummedupinonewordsmooth.Itshouldbeasmoothuniormgradualincreaseinpressureonthetriggeruntilthehammeralls.Followthroughisequallyimportant.Tinkinginsuperslowmotionthereissomeperiodotimeinbetweenwhenthehammerallsandthetimethattheprojectileexitsthebarrel.Ashootermustensurethattherieisnotmovedduetoerratictriggersqueezeorlackoollowthroughtohaveasuccessulshot.Mosthard-corererscanbetalkedthroughthisprocess.Somehoweverjustdonotcatchon.TerearetwosimilarwaystourthertheunderstandingotheSoldier.Firstwiththe 12JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014NextisatoolmentionedintheeldmanualandavailableatASChoweverIhavenotseentheirpresenceasmuchasIbelievetobenecessary.TeM15A1aimingcardisthegreencardthatdepictspropersightalignmentandisusedtoshowpropersightpicture.AtmostgroupzerorangesyouwillseeDrillSergeantsdrawinginthesandscribblingonpaperanddepictingwhattheywanttherertoseeinanumberootherashions.Ihavedonethesameandthereisnothingwrongwiththesetechniques.HowevertheM15A1aimingcardaccomplishesmostowhatwearetryingtogetthroughtoourSoldiers.IthastheversatilitytoallowustoshowaSoldierororaSoldiertodemonstratewhattheyaredoing.Itisoenaveryquickremedytoamassiveproblemlikecoveringthewholetargetwiththerontsightpostorsettingthewholetargetontopothetipotherontsightpost.TenexttoolistheM16sightingdevice.IhadneverseenonebeorebeingshownitbyanotherDrillSergeant.JustabouteverycyclethereisaDrillSergeantwhoasksmewhatitisandhowIamusingitandthenisblownawaybyhowuseulitis.Itisapieceomirroredglassthatclipsontheweaponrightabovethecharginghandle.Teglassisata45-degreeanglesothattherercanlookrightthroughitbutthecoachcanseethroughthesightsaswell.Tereissomedegreeoamiliarityandskillthatittakestouse.Tisisbecauseithererhasmisalignedthesightssignicantlyandthecoachalignsthemcorrectlyyouandthererseetwodiferentthings.Forexampleitherersaysthattheirsightsarealignedandaimedcentermassbuttheyactuallyhavetherontsightpostallthewaytotheleorrightintherearsightaperturethecoachwillseethesightsalignedbutaiminggrosslyoftarget.TereorethecoachhastohavesomepracticewiththisdevicebeoretroubleshootingSoldierswhohavenoideawhattheyaredoingwrong.Howeverthisdevicecanquicklygiveacoachinsightintomanydiferentundamentalerrors.SomeothemincludethererstillbreathingwhiletakingtheshottherertryingtotimeashotinalargewobbleareainsteadosettlingtheriebeoreringmisaligningthesightsSSGChadSageisaDrillSergeantinCharlieCompany3rdBattalion60thInfantryRegiment193rdInfantryBrigadeaimingatthenumberedsignontheirlaneinsteadothetargetontheirnumberlanetruestoryetc.OnetechniqueusedtocheckontheSoldierwhocontinuestomovetheirheadeitherinbetweenshotsorinbetweengroupsistojustdrawtwodots.Havetherergetintheirringposition.TenmakeasmalldotonthebuttstockotheweaponandasmalldotontheSoldierschecksothatthetwodotsaretouching.TenyouarereetocheckonotherSoldiersandallyouhavetodoisglanceandseeithedotsaretouchingtoseeithererinquestionhasmovedhisherheadagain.ItisprobablynotatechniquetobeusedwitheverySoldierbutithatistheproblemwithareritgivesyouthereedomtocoachadiferentSoldierandstillhaveawaytomonitortheoriginalwarriorsdeciency.TesearejustaewothethingstobeconsideredtechniquesIhavelearnedandplacestoreerencemoreinormation.Terearemanymoreplacesthatcancauseissuessuchascrosshandandeyedominanceneedingglassesandbeingabletotelliitisinacttheweaponthatiscausingtheproblem.ButwiththeinormationmentionedabovewehavearealgoodstartatgettingmoreSoldierszeroedperdayandconsequentlyreeingupmoretimetospendhelpingotherprivates.InconclusionIamconvincedthat99.9oSoldierscanbezeroedwiththerightcoach.Terightcoachisnotacertainperson.Itissomeonewhounderstandsassessingthererassessingshotgroupsandhasthetoolstomakechanges.Itissomeonewiththetimeskillandpatiencetoremedyamultitudeoissuesinashortamountotimeandrounds. December2013-March2014JacksonJournal13December2013-March2014JacksonJournal13TRADITIONFortJacksonhashadavitalroleinpreparingAmericanstoservetheircountryforover96years.Whentheinstallationwasbuiltin1917justliketodayournationwasatwar.Sincethennumerousunitshavepreparedforbattlehere-the4thInfantryDivisionthe101stAirborneDivisionandthe81stInfantryDivision.Morethan500000SoldierstrainedherebeforeghtinginWorldWarII.TheSoldierswhotrainedherebeforeusleaveuswithaproudlegacyandhaveinspiredmanytofollowintheirfootsteps.AlthoughtheArmyhaschangedtremendouslyovertheyearsweareallpartofthatlineageofbraveAmericans.Allofusshouldbeproudtobepartofthetraditionthatdenesthisgreatinstallation.TRAININGTrainingisourhallmark.WithtwoBrigadesnineBattalionsand52CompaniesfocusedsolelyontrainingSoldiersinBasicCombatTrainingBCTFortJacksonisthelargestInitialMilitaryTrainingCenterintheU.S.Army.RoughlyhalfofallSoldierswhocompleteBasicCombatTrainingintheUnitedStatesArmydosoatFortJacksonSC.WearealsohometoAdvancedIndividualTrainingunitstheSoldierSupportInstitutetheDrillSergeantSchoolArmedForcesChaplainCenterandSchoolVictoryCollegeandtheNationalCenterforCredibilityAssessment.TRANSFORMATIONAlthoughwehaveaproudtraditiononwhichtorelyandinspireuswemustneverlosesightofthefuture.Tobeeffectivewemustbewillingandreadytoacceptchange.Transformationmeansmorethanjustmodernizingourinfrastructure.Thismeansconstantlychallengingourselvesourmethodsandourmeans.Transformationisnotanewconcepthere.Ourresponsibilityasleadershingesonourabilitytocontinuallyevaluateandimprovetraining.ItisonlybyprovidingthebesttrainingthateffectivetransformationfromcivilianintoSoldiercanoccur. 14JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014IhavebeenintheUnitedStatesArmyortwelveyears.Ihaveendured57monthsocombattime.YetnothinghasbeenmorechallengingthanbeingaDrillSergeant.WhenIarrivedtomyDrillassignmentatFortJacksonIjoinedDeltaCompany3-60thInantryduringthetransitionromwhitephasetobluephase.WhatIlearnedisthoseewshortweekswasextremelyvaluableandwillstickwithmethroughoutmyassignmentandcareer.WiththatbeingsaidIdidntgettheprideIeltduringmyrstcycle.WhenItookthisassignmentIguredlikemostpeopleIwoulddomytimeandleave.Iknewitwasgoingtobelonggruelingdaysthatwerementallyandphysicallydemanding.IguredIwouldshowuptoworkdothejobtothebestomyabilityandgohome.IknewtherewasnowayIwouldmakeaconnectionwithyoungpeopleIwouldtrain.Ididnthavetimeorthat.TatisnotwhatIwashereor.Asithappensontherstdayoreceivingnewwarriorsthereisalotoenergyandcontrolledchaos.Whentheygetothebusallyouseearebodies.TerearesomanyothemIthoughttomysel.Tereisntalototimeinthedaytostopandprocesstheactthatoverthenextewweeksyouaretheirsoleprovider.ADrillSergeantandtrainingwillbethiswarriorsentireuniverseorthenextnineweeks.Asthedayspassintherstphaseyouretryingtolearnnamesandaces.Overthenextweekorsoyoubegintonoticepersonalitytraitsandquirksintheirbehavior.Astimecontinuesyoubegintoanticipatetheindividualwarriorsneedsandwheretheymayneedextraassistancebasedonwhatyouhavenoticed.Ibegantondmyselseeingthemasindividualsandnotjustasmyplatoon.Aferexhaustingdaysattherange.Wewereatthecompanygettingreadyoraccountabilityormationwhenawarriorcameuptomeandaskedihecouldtalktome.Hesaidhehadahardtimeattherange.Itwashisrsttimeshootingaweaponandhedidntunderstandtheproperringtechniques.HeexpressedhisappreciationandgratitudeorthetipsIgavehimtohelphimqualiy.Itoldhimnothankswasneeded.OverthenextweeksIwatchedtheplatoonchange.Teymadeittothepointwheretheycouldmarchthemselvestochow.Idontknowitheyweresensinggraduationwaswithinreachbuttheyseemedtobewalkingjustalittlebittaller.Teirheadsseemedtobealittlebithigherandtheirstephadalittleextrasomethingtoit.AsIwatchedthemanoverwhelmingeelingopridecameoverme.IhadntstoppedtothinkaboutituntilthispointbutItrainedthesesoldiers.IhadahandinmoldingtodaysArmy.TeseyoungpeoplewillgointotheworldtoserveandprotectourcountryandTheExperienceofaNewDrillSergeantSFCMurphyClayton 38JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014trainthetaskathandtostandard.Lessrequentlypoortrainingrefectsabreakdowninthegoodorderanddisciplineotheorganizationandleadershavemadeaconsciousdecisiontoshort-changethetraininginordertogetdonesoonerreducethestressotheeventetc.Tankullyndingaunitcompletelyoutotolerancehappensveryveryinrequently.Almostasinrequentisaleaderinspectionthatrevealsaunittobecompletelytostandardinallaspectsoitstrainingoroperation.Iyoueverhavethisexperienceenjoyit.Byarthemostcommonresultoanunannouncedinspectionisthediscoveryoahealthymixothingstheunitisdoingwellthingstheunitneedstoimproveandthingstheunitisntevenawareitissupposedtobedoing.Mypersonalexperiencehasbeenthatthisdescriptionisaccurateorabout95ounitsIhavevisitedwhetherinRADOCFORSCOMorcombat.Mostleaderinspectionsrevealunitsthathavebothstrengthsandweaknesses.OrasoneomyormerseniorleadersoncesaidBeingalittlescrewedupisnormal.NowWhatDoIDoIyouhavepreparedproperlyyouwilldiscoverthatyoubegintonoticealotothingsthatoncepassedunderyourgazeunrecognized.Youmaybeabitshockedatthedeciencieswithinyourunitonceyoulearntoseethem.ButonceyoumastertheartoinspectingandcanseeyourunitmoreclearlywhatdoyoudowithyourobservationsOnthoserareoccasionswhenthestarsalignandyoundaunitringonalleightcylinderscongratulatetheleadersontheirexceptionalworkandbeonyourway.Whenyoundaunitcompletelyoutsideoacceptableperormancestopthetrainingimmediatelyandeducateandrecertiytheleaderswhichmayrequirethattheunitreschedulethetrainingeventoralatertime.Tiscomeswithallsortsoresourcingissuesandmanyleadersarehesitanttotakesuchdrasticaction.Morethantwodecadesoexperienceconvincemehoweverthatitisthecorrectresponse.Badtrainingismuchhardertoovercomethannotraining.Tankullyyouwillrarelyencountertheneedorsuchdrasticaction.Inmostcasesyouwillspendyourtimewiththeinspectedunitpraisingsomeportionothetrainingandcorrectingotheraspectsbyquestioningcounselingandcoaching.Teonlyrealchallengeortheinspectingoceristocommunicatewhattheunitisdoingwellandwherethereisneedoimprovement.Doingonlytheormerleadstocomplacencyandacceptanceolowerstandardswhiledoingonlythelaterunderminesthecondenceotheunitsleaders.Yourconversationswithleaderswilllikelycoveravarietyoissuesincludingproperresourcingtrainingmanagementandtrainingtechniques.Myexperiencehasbeenthemostvaluablediscussionsalsoincludeaheavyocusonthepeopleparticularlythesubordinateleaderswhomakeuptheunit.TebestleadersIhaveknownalmostnevertreatedtrainingandleaderdevelopmentasseparateissuesbutsawthemastwosidesothesamecoin.CaptainJonesGoestoTrainingCPJonesdecidedtocheckonthepreliminarymarksmanshipinstructionPMIbeingexecutedattheplatoonlevelanddeterminedthatshewouldvisit2ndPlatoon.Shestartedbyexaminingthetrainingscheduletodeterminewhattaskswerebeingtrainedwhowasconductingthetrainingwheretheywereconductingitandwhatthecorrectuniormwas.Shepulledtheappropriateeldmanualsandtrainingsupportpackagelistedasreerencesonthetrainingscheduleandre-amiliarizedherselwiththeconditionsandstandardsassociatedwiththetasksbeing December2013-March2014JacksonJournal39trained.Shealsoquicklyreviewedtheaeractionreviewromthelasttimeherunitexecutedthistrainingremindingherselotheareasthatneededimprovement.RecognizingthatthetrainingincludedaspecializedpieceoequipmenttheLaserMarksmanshiprainingSystemshelookedatAnnexAoFM3-22.9tore-amiliarizeherselwiththemajorcomponentsotheequipmentandtobriefyreviewtheguidelinesortheuseothesystem.FinallyrememberingthattheplatoonhadthecompanyLMVatthetrainingsiteshepulledoutM9-2320-365-10andamiliarizedherselwiththreeothepreventivemaintenancechecksandservicesrequirementsorthevehicle.Gettingintothepublishedtraininguniormandgrabbinghernotebookshemovedtothetrainingsite.ShearrivedatthesiteandwasobservingthePMIwhenSSGBakersawherandgaveherabrieoverviewothetraining.ShenoticedthattheSoldierswereinadierentuniormthanprescribedbutSSGBakerexplainedthattheplatoonsergeantSFCAblehadmodiedtheuniormbasedontherisingtemperaturebeorehelethetrainingareatogotoadentalappointment.ShethankedSSGBakeradjustedheruniormandwalkedovertooneothetraininglaneswhereSoldierswereexecutingthetargetboxdrill.ShenoticedtheSoldierswerecyclingthroughthelanequicklyandaskedoneotheSoldierstodescribethestandardorthedrill.TeSoldierexplainedthatSSGBakerhadtoldhimthatthetargetboxdrillwasreallyawasteotimeandtheSoldiersshouldjustspendaewminutesonitbeoremovingtomoreuseultrainingbecauseotherwisewewillbeouthereallday.WhensheaskedSSGBakeraboutthestandardorthetargetboxdrillherepliedthathewasntreallysure.SheaskedtoseetheappropriatemanualbutSSGBakerexplainedVigilantInspectingthathehadletherangeboxcontainingalltheappropriatemanualsbackatthecompany.UsingthenotesshehadtakeninpreparationorthevisitCPJonesexplainedthestandardsortheexecutionothetargetboxanddirectedSSGBakertoimplementthosestandardsonthelane.SSGBakerappearedreadytoarguebutthenagreedandmovedovertothetargetboxlane.CPJonesmovedtotheLMSwhichwasstillbeingunboxedwhenshewalkedup.ShenoticedthatSSGCartersupervisingtheLMSsitehadalistocomponentsandwasinventoryingthemastheycameoutothebox.SheaskedSSGCarterhoweectivetheLMSreallyisandSSGCarterrespondedthatitmostlydependsuponthecompetenceotheleaderusingthetrainingaid.WhenCPJonesaskedorclaricationSSGCarterspent10minutesshowingherthebesttechniquesoremployingtheLMSanddescribedseveralcommonpracticesthatunintentionallydegradethevalueothetraining.SSGCartersaidthathehadneverusedthesystembeorecomingtothecompanybutthatSFCAblehadtakentwohoursduringthelastResetperiodtoteachhimhowtousethesystemandhowtocareortheequipmentandthatthecorrectuseothesystemreallyseemedtobehelpingSoldiersmastertheundamentalsomarksmanship.CPJonesthankedSSGCarterortheclassandaskeditherewasanythingSSGCarterneededtomakethetrainingmoreeective.Gettingtheequipmentouthereontimewouldbegreatheresponded.Apparentlytherewassomescrew-upwiththeLMVthismorningandthetrainingaidsarrivedaertheSoldiersdid.CPJonesagreedtolookintothematterandagainthankedSSGCarter.WalkingovertotheparkedLMVshereviewedthedispatchwhichwasuptodateandcheckedtheengineoilitwaslow.BynowshewasnotsurprisedtoseethatSSGBakerhaddriventhevehicletotrainingthatmorning.AsCPJonesconsideredhernextactionsherealizedthatshehadonlybeenwiththeplatoonor30minutesbuthadseenagreatdeal.ShenoticedSFCAblewalkinguptothetrainingsitereturningromhisdentalappointmentandmadeaquickmentallistothingsthatshewantedtodiscusswithhim 40JacksonJournalDecember2013-March2014COLJosephMcLambistheCommanderofthe193rdInfantryBrigadeBasicComatTrainingatFortJackson.Teplatoonsriskmanagementsystemwasworkingverywellandtheunithadmadeatimelyandappropriateadjustmenttochangingweatherconditions.TetargetboxtrainingwasnottostandardandmoreimportantlytheNCOinchargedidntseemtoknowthestandard.PerhapshehadnotbeenadequatelyrehearsedandcertiedbutgiventheattentionSFCAblehadgiventotrainingSSGCarterontheLMSitseemedunlikely.TeLMStrainingwasrstraterefectingbothSSGCarterspersonalcompetenceandSFCAblesleaderdevelopmenteorts.TeplatoonscommandsupplydisciplinelookedgoodasevidencedbySSGCartersinventoryingthecomponentsotheLMS.OntheotherhandtheplatoonsattentiontoPMCSorvehiclemaintenanceatleastwassuspectasnoonehadidentiedandcorrectedtheaultyoillevel.OveralltheplatoonseemedtobedoingwellbutalloherconcernsortheunitseemedtohaveonethingincommonSSGBaker.HehadailedtobringtheappropriatetrainingreerencesdidnotproperlyPMCShisvehicleandwasnotawareoanddidnotenorcetrainingstandards.ShedecidedtogetSFCAblesassessmentoSSGBakersperormancetodetermineiherobservationswereananomalyorpartoalargerpattern.ISFCAblealsoexpressedconcernoverSSGBakersperormanceitwouldbetimetodeterminetheunderlyingissue.ClosingToughtsLearningtoinspectaunitparticularlyinaninormalsettingisoneothemostvaluableskillsthatanocerorseniorNCOcanattain.Tisskilltypicallygainedwhileservingatthecompanylevelwillprovebenecialthroughoutalietimeoservice.Oncealeadermovesabovethecompanyechelonhewillndthatinormationabouttheunitincreasinglycomesromdigitaldisplayswrittenreportsandprintedcharts.Butthebestandmostreliablewaytoassessandimproveyourorganizationremainstheskillthatyoulearnedasacompanycommanderorrstsergeantpersonalinspectionandinteractionwiththeunitintheconductoitsduties.
