August-November2013JacksonJournal23philosopherImmanuelKantwrotethatMoralityandhumanityascapableoitisthatwhichalonehasdignity.Converselydisdainisalackorespectaccompaniedbyaeelingointensedislike.Whensomeoneistreatedwithdisdaintheylearnnothingbecausetheyaretreatedasineriororworthless.TerstgroupoDrillSergeantstreatedtheirSoldierswithdignityitwasapparentinthewaytheycarriedthemselvesandthewaytheytalkedwiththeirSoldiers.Teywereallocusedandproessional.Telanguageandattitudedisplayedbythesecondgroupdemonstratedacontrarymannerobehaviorwheretheirleadershipdidnotcomprehendtheirroleastrainersandmentorsnorunderstanditsnegativeimpactonlearning.Intodayssocietywearewitnessingchangesinboththesocialandmoralabricohowwetreatoneanother.ProanityconrontationandagenerallackorespecttowardsothersaremoreprevalentineverydayAmericanlieandpromotedinmediaoutletssuchasrealitytelevisionandtheinternet.Tecosthasbeenthedegradationotraditionallyheldvaluesandstandardsamongstouryouth.IntheArmyithasbecomeespeciallyproblematicreversingthistrendaswerecruitnewSoldiersromthroughoutthisnationraisedunderthesecurrentconditionsandbringthemintoanenvironmentbuiltuponmoralcharactertraitsthatpromoterespectintegrityandvalues.Manyyoungmenandwomenjointhemilitarybecausetheyarelookingtojoinanorganizationthatispledgedtohighstandardsandinculcatedwithmembersthathavethem.Teyareseekingrespectandasenseoworth.OurresponsibilityasleadersistodelivertheneededingredientstodevelopautureSoldierwhocanespouseourorganizationalvaluesandmoreimportantlylivetheminbothpeacetimeandcombat.oachievethistheymustbetreatedwithdignitynotdisdain.Ithasbeensaidthatnoteamcanwinachampionshipwithacoachthatailstoinspirethemtoachievegreatness.TesamemaximholdstrueordevelopinganArmy.DignityorDisdainHowtodevelopaSoldiertomeetourArmygoalsandstandardsisdependentuponthemethodwetreatandacttowardsthemintraining.Manywouldstatethattrainingmustbehardavalidargumenttoproperlyprepareouryoungmenandwomenortherigorsandharshnessowar.Howeverthereisadiferencebetweenbeinghardandbeingcallous.Soldiersdonotrespondnorlearninanenvironmentpermeatedbycadrethattreatthempoorly.Iwelookbackintoourownpastasstudentsinschoolwecanprobablydiscernwhichclassandteachertaughtusthemostinourpreparationoradulthoodandlie.Iwouldguessthatwewouldallpicktheteacherthatheldustothehigheststandardstookinterestinourlearningandtreateduswithrespectanddignity.TereisnodiferenceintrainingaciviliantobecomeaSoldier.UnortunatelytherearethoseindividualswhobecomedetachedromtheirSoldiersandcontemptuousintheirattitudetowardstrainingthem.TequestioniswhyCadretreatSoldierspoorlywhentwothingsoccurrsttheylosesightotheirdutytoserveasarolemodelandmentorwhoisresponsibleorboththeindividualandcollectivedevelopmentotheirSoldiers.SecondlycadrememberstreatnewSoldiersbadlywhentheymentallyseparatethemselvesromtheirSoldiersthroughaprocessthatdehumanizesthemandreducestheirimportancetotheorganization.Tisunortunateprocessbeginswhencadreviewrecruitsasunworthyorbeneaththem.Itoccurswhenweailtoexhibittheverytraitsweadvocateasanorganizationandwebecometheenemyourselves.ItisasimilarprocessthatourSoldiersaceincombatwhendealingwithstressandthemyriadodangerousoperationsthatinvolveseparatingriendromoeinacounter-insurgencyenvironment.TeprocessstartsslowlybythelanguageandnameswechoosetoaddressnewSoldiersoroutsiderstotheorganization.Itstartsbythemannerismsandattitudewehavewhendealingwiththemonadaily 46JacksonJournalAugust-November2013Icameromaprettyroughneighborhood.IgrewupinagoodsizedtowninOhiowithapopulationoapproximately50000.Temedianhouseholdincomewasabout17000themurderrateat1.8timesthenationalaverageandmyneighborhoodwouldoenendupinthemiddleorivalingBloodsandCripsturwars.Weusedtojoketothehorrororiendsvisitingromoutsideoourneighborhoodthatadaywasnotcompleteuntiltherewasapolicecarambulanceorpoliceootchasedownourstreet.Terewereoendrugbustsinhousesdowntheroadfghtsthatinvolvedpullingbricksoutothestreettouseasweaponsandconstantyellingandshouting.Fastorward12yearsandhereIaminFortJacksonSouthCarolinaasaBasicrainingDrillSergeant.Teconstantyellingisstilltherebutitisamotivationalshoutingversusanegativeviolentkindoyelling.IwouldliketosayIdonotexhibitsignsthatwouldsuggestthatIcameromsuchaviolentneighborhoodbutIoentimesseethatviolentpastintheacesthatshowuphereorachanceatabetterlieinourArmy.Icanspotitamileawayandmyheartgoesouttothem.OneSoldierinparticularcamethroughmyplatoonandyoucouldseethethugliestylealloverhisace.Heconstantlywasgettingintroublehadaproblemwithauthorityandwereallywerenotworthhistimeorrespect.Onedayinparticularhewashavinganunusuallyhardtimerememberingthatbeorehecouldsteporomthepositionoparaderesthehadtogotothepositionoattention.TeDrillSergeantskeptsendinghimawaytotryitagainandhestillwasnotgettingit.Youcouldseehimgettingmoreandmorerustratedandeachtimehewalkedawayhisbrowsgotlowerintohisacehisfstsandjawtighterclenchedandhestartedmumblingeverytimehewassentototryitagain.IwasjustobservingtheinteractionsbutthethreeDrillSergeantshekeptapproachingweregettingmoreandmoremadwiththeattitudethatthisSoldierwasemitting.LaterthatdayIapproachedtheSoldiertoaskhimwhatthatwasallabout.Hestatedthathewasnotgoingtorespectanyonethatdidnotrespecthimfrst.Heeltthathehadearnedrespectromeveryoneintheworldorwhathehadbeenthroughsoarinhisshort19-yearlie.IpointedouttheactthatallotheDrillSergeantshadbeenthroughcomparableandincomparableLeaveyourpastinthepast.Leavethebadyouaretryingtogetawayfrombackthere.Youwantafreshstarttrulystartover.ADifferentKindofMentorshipSFCElizabethWeaver
