6JacksonJournalJanuary-March2013Emotionsarestirredineveryenlistedarmyveteranwhenqueriedabouttheirbasictrainingexperience.Teirmemoryquicklyreturnstothephysicalexhaustionmentalstrainandemotionalangstotheexperience.Forgoodorotherwisethenamesooneormoreotheirdrillsergeantswillprobablyneverbeorgotten.Alsotheriendshipsorgedwiththeircomradeswhosharedtheexperienceareondlyremembered.Graduationdayisrecalledwithadeepprideanddeepsenseoaccomplishment.Whythingsweredoneduringthetrainingwasnotalwaysclearbuthowitelttogothroughitremainsveryclear.Tetaskoashioningwarriorsoutothecivilianshasbeenachallengeormilitaryleadersthroughoutthecenturies.Whetherconscriptsorvolunteersthemissionobasictraininghasbeenthesametakearawgreencivilianandtransormhimorherintoaprocientsoldierwiththeoundationalskillstosurviveandeventhriveonthebattleeld.Terehavebeenmanyvariablesthatdeterminethelengthdicultyandintensityobasicrecruittraining.Oneconsiderationhasbeenwhetherornotthenationisatpeaceorwar.Inthemodernerabasictrainingduringperiodsodeclaredwarhasgenerallybeenmoreintenseocusedandshorterinlengththanduringpeacetimeshorterbecausethereisanimmediateandsometimesdesperateneedorsoldierstoreplacecombatlossestorotatewithsoldierswhohavecompletedtheircombattourandtoormnewunits.Anothervariableobasictraininghasbeenthenatureothenationsgovernment.Becauseothelackopersonalreedomandindividualrightsinanauthoritarianstatebasictraininginsuchanationsmilitarycanbeextremelybrutalandevenliethreatening.LivereexerciseswerethenorminbasictrainingduringtheNaziperiodinGermany.Asastandardtheytoleratedonepercentkilledorwoundedduringtrainingasthepricetopayorgreatersurvivalonthebattleeld.1Basictraininginademocraticstateiscertainlydemandingbutgenerallynotasbrutalorinhumaneasinatotalitarianstate.Athirdvariablethathasdeterminedthenatureobasictraininghasbeenthetacticstheormationsandthetechnologyotheage.Forcenturiessoldiersmarchedintobattle.Tebestarmiesodiferentperiodsohistoryweretrainedwellenoughtodocomplexturningmovementsintheheatobattle.FredericktheGreatsPrussianarmyGeneKlannPh.D.BasicTrainingThroughtheAges January-March2013JacksonJournal7wasespeciallynotedorthis.ConsequentiallybasictraininginthePrussianarmyconsistedosixtoeighthoursdailyodrillingmarchingandconstantlyrehearsingbattleormations.echnologychangedthedegreeoemphasisgiventodrilling.Nowsoldiersmovedtothebattleeldinarmoredghtingvehicles.Nolongerwasthereaneedorbattlemarchingormationsormarchinglongdistancesinullbattlegearinamatterohours.Overthecenturiesandacrossarmiesacultureobasictraininghasevolved.Tiscultureincludesasetosharedattitudesvaluesgoalsandpracticesthatuniversallycharacterizebasictraining.Inbasictrainingtheindividualisliterallyindoctrinatedintothemilitary.Tisgenerallyincludestrainingonavarietyosubjectsandissuese.g.militarycourtesyanddisciplinethecustomsandtraditionsothearmywearingtheuniormcloseorderdrillwhichpromotesinstantresponsetoordersphysicalconditioningandsportsroadmarchestobuildupenduranceeldcrafi.e.theartolivingandunctioningeectivelyoutdoorsmarksmanshipandsmallarmsringpersonalhygienemilitarysanitationandrstaidthecareandcleaningopersonalweaponsclothingandequipmentthemissionvaluesandorganizationotheArmythelawsowarandethicalconductinbattlepersonalsecurityandsaeguardingsensitiveinormationdeenseagainstchemicalattacktacticsatthesquadplatoonandcompanylevelansoon.Anothercentralelementobasictrainingcultureisthechangeomindsetandattitudesthattakesplaceintherecruits.Basictrainingtransitionsandtransormstherecruitsromciviliansintosoldiers.Techallengestheymustmeettheexperiencestheysharewithcomradesandthecumulativetrainingprocessingeneralinstillsinthemthemoraleprideandspiritobeingasoldier.Tesearedistinguishingattitudesoarmycultureandonesthatarenotparticularlycommoninthepublicorprivatesector.Teyareessentialinthearmyhoweversincetheyarekeytosoldiersperormanceonthebattleeldghtingaggressivelyinanethicallycontrolledmanner.ThroughtheAgesInbasictrainingrecruitsnolongerthinkoractasindividualsbutlearntounctionasmembersoanecienthighperormingteam.Asenseobelongingiscreatedtheideaobeingpartosomethinggreaterthanonesel.Tismeetsabasichumanneed.Dr.AbrahamMaslowreerredtoitaspartooursocialneedwhichisthethirdlevelohisiconichierarchyoneeds.Itisthecamaraderiesenseocommunitybondingandbrotherhoodagenderneutraltermorwhichisthearmyisnoted.Insteadobeingaciviliantherecruitsnowgainanewidentityanddenitionothemselves.Atthecompletionobasictrainingtheynowdenethemselvesassoldiers.Teyidentiywiththevaluesandtraditionsothearmyaswellwiththoseindividualsandheroeswhohaveservedbeorethem.Tereisacertainmagictothisalmostintangibleandsubtleculturalprocess.Itisthemagicoawellthoughtoutwellexecutedandcreativebasictrainingprocess.WhatcanwelearnromastudyothebasictrainingprocessothearmiesinhistoryAretherethemesandpatternsthatcanbeovaluetodayondtheanswerletsdoabriereviewandndoutSPARTATearmyotheGreeknationstateSpartaratesamongthemostrespectedandproessionalinworldhistory.Itwasasocietytotallydedicatedtowar.InSpartasheydayinthe4th5thand6thcenturiesBCitwascommonlyacceptedthatoneSpartansoldierwasworthseveralmenoanyotherstate.2TearmywasthecentralocusoSpartaandtherstobligationoaSpartancitizenwastobeagoodsoldier.BraverywastheultimatevirtueortheSpartansbetrayingthetrustocomradesinbattlewastheultimateshame.Spartanmothers 8JacksonJournalJanuary-March2013wouldgivetheirsonstheirshieldthatweighedfypoundswiththewordsReturnwithitorbecarriedonit3TeirlielongtrainingroutinewassostrictthatPlutarchtheGreekhistoriansaid...theSpartansweretheonlymenintheworldwithwhomwarbroughtarespiteinthetrainingorwar.4TebasictrainingprocessorthearmyoSpartastartedatageseven.AllphysicallytSpartanboysweretakenromtheiramiliesandsenttoamilitarybootcampknownastheAgoge.Heretheylearnedoundationalmilitaryskillsthatwouldbecontinuouslyenhanceduntiltheendotheirarmyserviceatagesixty.Teseundamentalswerebasedonalaconichonorcodethatemphasizedsuperhumansel-controlregardlessothedangerhardshipsorpaininvolved.Teseweretobebornesilently.Sel-disciplineandausterityweretheprimarygoalsoSpartaneducation.EachyouthintheAgogewasgivenonesetoclothesandlittleood.Teywereexpectedtondadditionalresourcesusingtheirowninitiativeeveniitmeantstealing.5Teysleptintheopenyearroundonabedorushes.Teycompetedagainstoneanotherinsportingeventsgamesandmockbattlesinordertoosterprideandspirit.Teelderswouldprovokequarrelsamongtheboystodeveloportitudeandidentiycowardice.Teireducationwhichwasalldoneorallywastotallysubordinatedtotheneedsothemilitary.Teyweretaughttoreadandwritesotheycouldreadmilitarymaps.6StoriesandsongscelebratingSpartanwarheroeswereconstantlyemphasizedtoinspireandmotivate.Evenatthisearlyagetheywereconditionedtothinkandtoghtwithacalmocuseddeterminationandnotwithangerorrecklessness.Tesel-disciplineandsel-controlinstilledinSpartantraineeswaskeytotheirsuccessonthebattleeld.TisisthecentrallessonromtheSpartans.TeseverityotheSpartansel-disciplinewasmadepossiblebecauseothemilitaristicnatureotheSpartanculture.WhetherthiscouldbereplicatedintheindividualisticandindulgentWesternculturesisquestionable.TeRomanArmyBasictrainingintheRomanarmyemphasizedtightdisciplineunquestioningobediencemarchingweaponstrainingandobeyingorderswithouthesitation.7Romancenturionsledthistraining.Tesewereexperiencedleaderswholedromtherontinspiredbyexampleandhadreceivedtheirpromotionthroughdemonstratedcourageandskillincombat.Centurionscarriedavinesticktoindicatetheirauthority.Tisstickwasalsousedtodishoutpunishment.Beatingrecruitswasacommonandacceptedpractice.RomanhistorianacitusreportedthatthecenturionLucilliushadthehabitobreakingthestickoverhissoldiersbacksandthencryoutinaloudvoicegivemeanother.HissoldiersgavehimthenicknameGimmeanotherandlatermurderedhiminamutiny.8TeinitialtrainingocusothenewrecruitintheRomanarmywastomarchinlineandataconsistentspeed.Tiswasdoctrinalasmarchinginsuchamannerwouldkeepthearmyinacompactghtingormationreadyoranypossibility.Itwasalsotopreventstragglingwhichwouldmaketheormationvulnerabletoattack.TeRomanhistorianVegetiuswrotethatthesoldiersweretrainedtomarchinulleldpacktwentyRomanmiles18.4miles29.6kminvehours.9BesidemarchingtheRomanrecruitsweretaughtbattleorderrallyingtothecolorsandhowtoexecutevariousotherinantrymaneuvers.Oneothemorecommonmaneuverswastheortoiseinwhichthelegionnaireslinkedtheirshieldswiththeirneighborsorincreasedprotection.Besidesmarchingotherphysicalactivitiesemphasizedintrainingwererunninginullgearandswimming.Everyrecruitwasexpectedtobeabletoswim.Afermarchingandtnessthenextprioritywasweaponstraining.oavoidinjurywoodenswordsandwickerworkshieldswereused.oincreasestrengthandmakeiteasiertohandletherealweaponsthedummyweaponsweretwiceasheavyastherealones.Initiallytherecruitsusedthedummyweaponstoattackasix-ootheavywoodenstake.Herethesoldierwastrainedinvariousstrikesandcounter-strikes.Terewasaocuson January-March2013JacksonJournal9ThroughtheAgesthrustingratherthanslashingtheswordasathrustwoundoonlyaewincheswouldalmostalwaysbeatal.Aertherecruitswasdeemedcompetentinghtingagainstthestakestheywereassignedinpairstotrainagainstotherindividuals.Tisadvancedstageobasiccombattrainingwascalledarmaturaanexpressionusedinthegladiatorialschools.ClearlysomeothemethodsusedintrainingRomansoldierswereborrowedromthetrainingtechniquesothegladiators.10Weaponsusedinthearmaturawerestillmadeowoodbutothesameweightasweaponsusedinactualcombat.Aercompletingtheinitialtrainingwiththeswordtherecruitwastomastertheuseothespearthepilum.Forthisthewoodenstakeswereputtouseagainastargetsandthespearusedwasagaintwicetheweightothespearusedinactualcombat.TebasictrainingotheRomanarmyemphasizedmarchingandweaponstraining.Marchinginulleldpackwasandremainsanexcellentormophysicalendurancetraining.Extensiveweaponstrainingisoundationaltothesoldierscraandisessentialorsurvivalincombat.TePrussianArmyofFrederickTeGreatIn1740FrederickIIa.k.a.FredericktheGreatinheritedapowerularmyromhisatherKingFrederickWilliamI.TroughbattleexperienceandexperimentationFrederickdevelopedtheRoyalPrussianArmyintothemosteectiveEuropeanarmyotheeighteenthcentury.wooFredericksinnovationswerekeyanddrovePrussianbasicrecruittraining.FirstbecausethemusketthePrussianarmyusedwasclumsyandinaccurateFrederickstrainingemphasiswasonahigherrateandgreatervolumeorethentheenemy.Tisringwasollowedasquicklyaspossiblebyclosingwithavigorousbayonetattack.PrussianrecruitswereconstantlydrilledinthistechniqueandasaresultcouldremorerapidlythananyotherEuropeanarmy.SecondFrederickdevelopedwhathecalledtheobliqueorderobattle.TiswasafankingmovementthatwasdecisiveingivingthePrussiansbattleeldsuperiority.Sincethistacticcalledorasuddenwheelingturnunderreitrequiredahighdegreeomobilityfexibilityandmarchdiscipline.oachievethisFrederickmadesurehissoldiersweretrainedtomarchatdierentratesandtokeepinsteponlychangingtherateomarchatthecommandotheirleaders.Teywererepetitivelydrilledandwouldbeconstantlypracticemarchinginboththeirinitialtrainingandlaterwhenassignedtoaregiment.SincebothoFredericksinnovationsrequiredspeedoactionandmovementdisciplineinthePrussianarmywasdescribedaserocious.Tiswasespeciallytrueintheinitialtrainingphase.Moralewasnotaconsideration.Soldierswerenotevenallowedamongthecivilianpopulationandweregivenlittlereedomslesstheydesert.AsFredericktheGreatoPrussiahimselcommentedImysoldiersbegantothinknotonewouldremainintheranksbecauseconditionswerethatbad.11TecombinationobrutaldisciplinerapidringandastmarchingallowhichwereessentialelementsoPrussianrecruittrainingresultedinmanydramaticPrussianvictoriesoverenemyorcestwotothreetimeslargerthantheirown.Tisagainvalidatesthevalueormbutintodaysworldnotbrutaldisciplinetherepetitivetrainingoundamentalsandthepotentiallyhighimpactthataneectivebasictrainingprocesscanhave. 10JacksonJournalJanuary-March2013TeFrenchArmyofNapoleonInNapoleonsarmytherewasnocentralizedtrainingsystemorrecruits.Eachregimenthadadepotbattalionresponsibleorequippingtheconscriptandprovidingbasicinstructionbeoresendingthesoldierstotheirregiment.Tisinitialinstructionwaslittlemorethanmarchingandbasicweaponsorientation.Teregimentmighthavethreebattalionsdeployedwhiletheourthbattalionalmostalwaysunderstrengthservedasthedepotbattalion.Normallythedepotbattalionwouldstayathomestation.Tiswouldbeinamilitarydistrictromwhereconscriptsweredraed.Oncethebattalioncollectedenoughconscriptstheywouldbesenttotheorwardbasedbattalions.Uponarrivalinabattaliontheseniorsergeantsandotherveteranswouldconductconscripttraining.Itsqualitywasgenerallyconsideredtobequitegood.TetrainingwasbasedontheFrenchArmys1791DrillBookthatcontainedundamentalregulationsdrillsdisciplinesandtactics.12Teveteranswouldalsoeectivelyintegratetheconscriptsintothecultureothearmywiththeircampaignstoriesslangexperiencedbasedtipsandeventheirgrumbling.DisciplineintheFrencharmyduringthiserawasnotassevereasinotherEuropeanArmiesmoraleandtheleveloenthusiasmamongthegreenconscriptswasgenerallygoodbutdidvarysomewhatthroughouttheperiod.13AertheRussiandisastero1812theFrenchconscriptmightonlygettoreaewroundsbeoreleavingthedepot.14Misreswereexperiencedonanaverageoonceoutoeverysixshots.Inthedinandheatobattlethiscouldoenleadtodoubleloadingwhichwouldcausetherifetoexplodeandkilltherer.15TisplusaneorttoconserveammunitioncausedtheFrenchtoveryoenneglectmusketrypracticetoavoidthecasualtiescausedbyexplodingrifes.FieldMarshalLouis-NicolasDavoutisregardedbymanyhistoriansasoneotheablestoNapoleonsmarshals.HeisointeresttoourtopicbecausehiscorpsnotablyIIIcorpsrom1805-1809andIcorpsduring1812wererenownedorbeingthebesttrainedinNapoleonsArmy.16Histrainingmethodswhichbeganwithconscripttrainingwerenotedortheirrmdisciplinerigidcomplianceandpreciseobedience.17Histrainingtechniqueswerealsoquitecreative.IIIcorpswouldpracticenightghtingandnightweaponsringsomethingthatwasveryunusualortheperiod.18Davotstrainingmethodsincludedanethicalcomponent.Inhiscorpsplunderingenemyvillageswasprohibited.Tiswasapolicythatwasenorcedwiththedeathpenalty.Becauseohishightrainingstandardshiscorpswasconsideredmoretrustworthyandecientintheirperormanceodutythantheothercorps.TusintheearlydaysotheGrandeArmeDavoutscorpstendedtobeentrustedwiththemostdicultmissions.BasictraininglessonsromNapoleonsarmyincludethevalueorecruitsbeingtrainedandintegratedintotheunitbyexperiencedveteransrmdisciplineasdemonstratedbyMarshalDavoutscorpsandtheuseoastandardtrainingapproache.g.theFrenchArmys1791DrillBook.TeAmericanCivilWarTerewasnocentralizedbasictrainingintheAmericanCivilWar.BecausebasicrecruittrainingorboththeNorthernandSouthernarmieswasdoneatunitlevelthequalityothistrainingvariedgreatly.Itwasbasedonthewhimsotheregimentalcommander.Ithiscommanderhadpreviousmilitaryexperiencethenbasictrainingcouldbequitegood.Ihisrankwasreceivedbypoliticalappointmentandhehadnopreviousmilitaryexperiencethenthetrainingcouldbearcical.Newrecruitswhowereknownasreshshorsimplyshdrilledeveryday.Asstatedinaletterroma January-March2013JacksonJournal11ThroughtheAgessoldierTeydrilledustodeath.19Anotherlettermentionedhowtheywoulddrilleatdrilleatandthendrillsomemoreuntilthesunset.20Drillconsistedoteachingthemenmaneuverstheywouldneedtoperorminbattlesuchasormingabattleline.Teymightbemarchingincolumnandthenorderedtomoveintoalineorankandle.Intrainingthisonemaneuvermighttakemorethananhourtocomplete.TesemaneuverswerethesametacticsusedintheNapoleonicerayyearsprior.TetrainingmanualsorboththeNorthandSouthweretranslationsotheFrench1791DrillBook.Teinormationinthismanualwasgenerallytheonlytrainingthatthetrainersothesenewrecruitshadthemselvesreceived.Besidesdrillingtheotherbasicinstructionwashandlingtherife.Becauseoalackoammunitionandtheperceivedneedtosaveitorbattlemenobotharmiesreceivedlimitedexperienceringtheirweapons.Inactmanymenwentintobattlehavingnotredmorethanadozenroundsintraining.Loadingandringrequiredanine-stepprocess.Evenawell-trainedsoldiercouldnotremorethanthreeroundsperminute.TeSouthdidhaveanadvantageinweaponsringbecauseamajorityotheirsoldierswereromthecountrywherehuntingwitharifewasanecessitytoprocureood.Disciplineorthenewrecruitinbotharmieswasnotparticularlyharsh.Becauseotheirnaturalindependencemanyvolunteersounditextremelydiculttransitioningtomilitarylie.Adaptationtoarmydisciplineandregimentationwasoneotherstchallengesothenewsoldier.Teideaoshowingrespecttoandobeyingtheordersoahigher-rankingsoldierirrespectiveothatpersonsprewarsocialstandingamilyorwealthrequiredamajorpsychologicaladjustmentormany.21Anothersignicantadjustmentwaslearningtoliveintheeldi.e.theartoeldcra.Terecruitshadtolearnhowtobuildshelterstoprotectthemselvesromtheelementsproperlycooktherationsthatwereissuedtothemorageorsupplementalooddisposeosewageunctiontopreventcampdiseasessuchasscurvyandtyphusandmaintaintheirclothingweaponsandequipment.Doingthesethingsweremorechallengingormanysoldiersobotharmiesthanthedrillingandweaponsring.UnderstandinghowchallengingitisorsomerecruitstoadjusttothedisciplineandcomplianceomilitarylieandalsotolearntheartolivingintheeldaretwoothekeylessonsromtheinitialsoldiertrainingotheAmericanCivilWar.WorldWarItheAmericanArmyBasictrainingorthe2.8millionAmericanconscriptsduringtheGreatWarwasbasedonthebeliethataneventualbreakoutothetrencheswouldtakeplace.Whatwouldthenollowwouldbeopeneldmaneuvering.BasictrainingintheUSwasocusedonthiseventuality.Teresultwasanemphasisonmarksmanshipandopeneldoperations.Conscriptsweretaughttoadvanceinshortdispersedrushes.Becauseoneedbasictrainingwasreducedormthreemonthstothreeweeks.Inonerecordedcasesquadleaderswerechosenbyshoutingcommandstomenontheothersideoadensethicket.Tosewhovoicescouldbeunderstoodthoughthethicketgotthejob.Campsortheconscriptswereco-locatedwithexistingarmybases.Barrackshadtobeconstructed.Oncematerialswerereceivedatwo-storybarrackbuildingcouldbeconstructedinthreedays.Soldiersreerredtothesenewlyconstructedcampsasdetentioncamps.Uponarrivalthearmyconscatedtheconscriptsclothesandsentthemtotheirhomeaddress.Saloonsand 12JacksonJournalJanuary-March2013brothelswereolimits.ReligiousservicesandsingingandreadingattheYMCAacilitiesonbasewereencouraged.AsalwaysthesoldiersreportedthatkitchenpoliceorKPinthemesshallwasadreadulexperienceitincludedpeelingpotatoeswashingpotsandpansandthelike.Stablepolicemeantgroomingmulesthatbitandkickedaswellasshovelingmanure.Apparentlynooneaskedhowtheseactivitieswereaectingthenewsoldiersattitudesandmorale.Initiallytherewasquitealotodrillingasmuchassevenhoursinaday.Becauseoanearlyshortageoactualweaponswoodendummyrifeswereusedbymanytrainees.22Alsobecauseoalackouniormstheconscriptsweregivenwhatwasavailable.Tisresultedinmanysoldiersbeingissuedeithertoolargeotoosmalluniormparts.Asaresulttheseinitialormationswereasighttobehold.Mostsoldiersenjoyedtheweaponsringandbayonettraining.Bothseemedtoberealcondencebuildersasthiswassomethingtheconscriptseltrealsoldiersshouldbedoing.Ontheriferangeeachconscriptred30shotsorrecord.150pointswereneededtoqualiy.Iall30shotswerebull-eyestheywouldscore200points.23obuildhardinessandendurancetherewerelongmarchesinulleldpacks.Onesoldierwrotehomethathisunitparticipatedinanine-daycross-countrymarchwithseveralmockbattlesmixedin.Onesoldierwrotehomereportinghisroutineduringadayobasictraining.Wegetupat545AMdressedby550andareassembledinrontobarracksor600reveille.Breakastollowswithruiteggspotatoesandcoee.At645everyoneisoutordrillthatcontinuesuntil1145vehours.Dinnerlunchbeginsat1215withmeatpotatoespeasbreadandadessertwithicewatertodrink.Intheaernoonlecturesarereceivedonavarietyotopicssuchasarmyrulesandorganizationcustomsandtraditionsthearticlesowarconductanddisciplineandallothermanneromilitarytopics.At530PMwearecalledoutorretreatwhenthefagislowered.Aerdinnerwecleanourrifeswhichrequireagreatdealocleaningtopassinspection.24OncethesoldiersgottoEuropetheirtrainingcontinued.HeretheirinstructorswereexperiencedBritishandFrencharmyveterans.TeirocuswasontrenchwarareandnottheopeneldwararetrainingtheAmericanshadreceivedintheUS.SincetheghtinginFrancewasstillstalematedthebasicsotrenchghtingwereessential.Howeverthisconficteddirectlywiththetrainingphilosophyandocustheyhadreceivedpriortodeploying.25AkeylessonrombasictrainingotheAmericanArmyoWorldWarIwasitsemphasisonoutstandingmarksmanship.InacttheAmericansweresoaccurateanddeadlywiththeirriferethattheGermansroutinelythoughttheywereghtingagainstamuchlargerorcethantheyactuallywere.WorldWarIIAmericanArmyBasictrainingduringWorldWarIIrangedromeighttothirteenweeksinlength.Forexamplein1942AudieMurphyoneothemostdecoratedandamoussoldiersoWorldWarIIcompletedthirteenweeksobasictrainingatCampWoltersexasandthenwassenttoFortMeadeMarylandoradvancedinantrytraining.Initialprocessingatbasictraininggenerallytookourtosixdays.Processingincludedblood-typingimmunizationashowdowninspectionoclothingandequipmentelementarydrillinstructionandtestsandinterviewsattheclassicationsection.TerewerelecturesonmilitarycourtesyArticlesoWarsexhygienewarbondsandlieinsurance.FilmswereusedasoenaspossibleparticularlyimpressuponthementheenemythreattotheAmericanwayolie.Terewerealsoorientationtalksgivenbycommandingocersandothernon-commissionedpersonnelwithaocusoeasingthemindsomenwhosereceptioncenterexperiencewasdisturbing.26Teprocesstotransormarawrecruitintoasoldierincludedinstructionontraditionalmilitarytopicssuchascloseorderandceremonialdrillmilitarycourtesyanddisciplinephysicalconditioningandeldmarchescareandoperationoweaponspersonalhygieneandrstaidbasicsquadbattleormationsandsoon.27TerecruitwasassignedtoKPabouteverytwoweeks.RickJasonwholaterstarredinthetelevisionseriesCombatsaidhehadtocleanoutagreasetrapin January-March2013JacksonJournal13ThroughtheAgeshismesshallskitchenfoor.Hewentontosayitsmelledgodawul.28Lightsinthebarrackswereoutat1000PM.Soldierswouldgotothelatrineaer10PMtowriteletterssincethelightstherestayedonallnight.SolBrandellwroteextensivelyabouthisWorldWarIIbasictrainingexperience.Hesaiditincludedamachinegunandbarbedwireinltrationcoursetworunseverydayoverthecombatobstaclecourseathirty-twomileorcedmarchten-milespeedmarchestwo-miledouble-timemarchesallmarcheswereperormedwithull-eldequipmentmanyhoursopush-upsandothercalisthenicsbayonet-ghtingdrillshand-to-handanddirtyghtingclassescloseorderdrillsmapreadingnightpatrolsandnightmaneuversetc.Tiswasalldoneintheexassemi-arid105-degreedesertbydayandin45degreetemperaturesatnightasixtydegreedierenceBrandellsocersandnon-comssomeowhichwerecombatveteransusedtosaythatthistrainingwouldmakethemsoornerytheywouldbeabletochewrazorbladesandspitnails29Basictrainingchangedsignicantlyin1943andby1944amarkedimprovementinthetrainingwasnoticeable.Reportsromoverseascommandersindicatedthatsoldiersreachingtheirtheaterslackedtrainingonpracticaltopicsessentialorsurvivalincombat.Tisincludedmarksmanshipthestrengthandenduranceneededormarchingwithullpackcamoufagemapreadingandeldcraskillswheninbivouac.Itwascommonlyagreedthatduringthersttwoyearsothewartheweakestareaobasictrainingwasweaponsring.Basictrainingcenterslackedarmsandammunitionmostothemhadnoringrangesengineerconstructionotheseacilitieswasslowbecauseootherprioritiesandtherewasawoeulshortageoocersandenlistedmenqualiedtogivemarksmanshipinstruction.30Tisresultedinsoldersdeployingoverseaswhohadredonlytwentyroundsoramiliarization.Tissituationwasalmostscandalous.InJanuaryo1943theWarDepartmentdirectedthatnosoldierwoulddeployunlesshehadqualiedwithhisassignedweapon.31Terewasnowanacceleratedocusonweaponsring.Teresultwasthaty-ourhoursweresubsequentlyallottedormarksmanshipduringbasictraining.32Incontrastwiththedicultiesexperiencedinmarksmanshipthephysicaltnessprogramatthebasictrainingcenterswashighlysuccessulromtheveryrst.Physicalconditioningortraineesstartedimmediatelyuponarrivalandcontinuedsystematicallyandprogressivelyuntiltheyle.Itincludedcalisthenicsathleticgamesanobstaclecoursehand-to-handghtingandanindividualphysicaltnesstest.DoubtlessmanytraineesconsideredtheprogramtoovigorousbutimpliedintheArmysphysicaltrainingdirectiveswasthattherecruitsshouldpusheduntilithurts.33Allphasesobasictrainingsueredromashortageoqualiedocerandnon-commissionedocerpersonnelbutnowherewasitsomarkedasonthedrilleldandintheclassrooms.34Experiencedleaderswerealwaysneededtostanewunitsinstallationsandoroverseasdeployment.ManyocerscommissioneddirectlyromcivilianlielackedmilitaryexperienceandweresingularlyunttedorArmydutiesparticularlyinstructionalones.35Malassignmentswererequent.Ultimatelyocersassignedtothedrilleldorinstructionaldutysawitasakindoexile.Schoolsortheimprovementoocersteachingdeciencieswereeventuallyestablished.TeschoolheldatJeersonBarracksMOinlate1943placedemphasisonteachingmethods 14JacksonJournalJanuary-March2013andrequiredthestudentstoachieveahighlevelopedagogicalprociency.Schoolslikethisonepaidobysignicantlyraisingthelevelorecruittraining.36Itwasuniversallyacceptedthatdrillsergeantswerethemostimportantenlistedmenonthebasictrainingcadre.FirstandoremostadrillsergeantDSwasateacherbutasideromtheormalinstructiontheygavethesemenhadthepowertoinfuenceinmarkeddegreethemannerinwhichrecruitsacceptedArmylie.37TecommonDStechniquewastobeharshontherecruitsduringtherstewweeksinordertobreakthemdown.AstimeworeontheDSbecomemoreoamentorcoachandatherguretotherecruits.Teplatoonthenbecamesomewhatoabondedcohesiveunitwithsomecharacteristicsoaamily.TatconsideredmanymenwhoweredrillsergeantsduringWorldWarIIwereunortunatelyuntorthejobbytraininginclinationandpersonality.Manytimesdrillinstructorswereselectedromthebasictrainingclassthathadjustgraduated.38Abuseorecruitswascommon.Tisharshtreatmentwasalmostalwaysrationalizedwiththejusticationthattheserecruitswerebeingtrainedorcombat.Tereorelessonshadtobelearnedquicklysincethesoldiersbattleeldsurvivalinbattlewasatstake.Tesituationdidimprovesomewhatlaterinthewarwhensomereturningcombatveteransbecamedrillsergeants.AsignicantlessonromWorldWarIIUSArmybasictrainingwastheabsolutenecessityohavingtalentedandhighlyqualiedocersandnon-comsconductingthetraining.Tiswaskeytoaccomplishingthetrainingsaim.AswaslearnedearlyinWorldWarIIhavingmediocreandunqualiedpersonnelconductingbasictrainingresultedinsoldierswhosesurvivalskillsonthebattleeldwereinadequate.Tisledtomanyunnecessarycasualties.WorldWarIIGermanArmyrainingintheGermanArmyoWorldWarIIstillratesamongbestthatcombatpreparationthathaseverbeenconducted.Tisincludesandbeganwiththeirbasictraining.ProessorSirMichaelHowardaWorldWarIIcombatveteranandpopularBritishhistorianwroteanarticlein1978highlightingthedierencebetweentheAlliedandGermantroops.HewrotethatuntilaverylatestageothewarcommandersoBritishandAmericangroundorcesknewalltoowellthatinaconrontationwithGermantroopsonanythingapproachingequaltermstheirownmenwerelikelytobesoundlydeeated.TeGermanswerebetterthanwewerethatcannotbestressedtooen.EveryalliedsoldierinvolvedinghtingtheGermansknewthatthiswasso.39TeAmericanswerevictoriousnotbecauseotheirleadershiportrainingbutbecauseoamaterialsuperiorityuseomassiverepowerandadvancedtechnologies.40GermanywasamilitaristicsocietyandassuchviewedconscriptionasanhonorandproudobligationtotheGermannationanditspeople.41Germansocietyheldmembersothearmedorcesinhighesteem.Germanconscriptshadorthemostpartalreadyreceivedsomepre-militaryrainingineithertheStateLaborServiceRADorHitlerYouth.Inthesequasi-militaryorganizationstheylearnedhowtounctioninamilitaryenvironmenthowtoweartheuniormdisciplinebasicdrillandunitcamaraderie.Sincethesewerenottotallyrawrecruitsbasictraininginthearmycouldbeginwithmoreadvancedinstructionandanemphasisonahigherleveloskills.Inthe1930sbasictrainingwassixteenweekslongbutwartimenecessitiesreducedittoeightweeks.Inaninantrytrainingunittheresponsibilityororganizingandconductingtrainingellonthetrainingcompanycommander.Tebattalioncommandermonitoredthesetrainingactivitiesandinsuredproperstandardswereachieved.Tisentireapproachallowedacertaindegreeocreativityandindividualityonthepartotheinstructors.AgoodexampleothiswasthetrainingorganizedbyHauptmannCaptainFinkasreportedinGuySajearsbookeForgottenSoldier.42Basictrainingwasnotatypicaleight-hourdaybutwastoreplicatecombatconditionsascloselyaspossible.43rainingwasconductedinallmannersoweatherandalsoatnight.Becauseitwastoberealisticandrecreatecombatconditionslivere January-March2013JacksonJournal15ThroughtheAgesexercisesweretheroutine.Tismadethetraininginherentlyverydangerous.AshasalreadybeennotedtheGermanarmyacceptedaonepercentatalityrateintrainingasthenecessarypricetopayorsavingmoresoldiersliveslateronthebattleeld.44Alsoconscriptswhowerenotmotivedordisplayedanongoingnegativeattitudeduringtrainingcouldbesummarilyexecuted.45AttheheartothetrainingwastheinstructionoauniversaldoctrineorstandardoperatingproceduresorallGermantroops.Tiswasoundinthe1936ruppenuhrungManualandwasconsideredoneothegreatstrengthsotheGermanArmy.IthelpsexplainwhytheWehrmachtwassosuccessulintheearlyyearsothewar.Tisorwardthinkingdoctrineemphasizedpersonalinitiativeindividualleadershipcriticalthinkingfexibilityapplyingpersonalknowledgetoasituationandactingcondentlyontheirowndecisions.Everysoldierwasinstructedtobeprepareddohissuperiorsjobaswellashisownthiswasalreadyemphasizedinbasictraining.TisdoctrineisindirectcontradictiontothestereotypeotheGermansoldierbeingablindlyobedientandnon-thinkingrobot.46LikeClausewitztheruppenuhrungemphasizedoensiveaudacity.Teattackwasconsideredsuperiortothedeense.Itbelievedthatspeedandsurprisecouldoenallowanoutnumberedattackertobevictoriousoverastrongerenemy.Tereorethetrainingemphasisatalllevelswasonboldnessspeedanderociousnessintheattack.Tesewereconsideredbothasameanstorapidvictoriesandawaytominimizecasualties.Inthisdoctrinetherewerenothoughtsocompassiontowardtheenemy.47TisnodoubtledtosomeotheexcessesotheGermanArmyonallrontsduringthewar.TeGermanArmysoveralltrainingprioritiesincludedtrainingorcombatweaponsringtheoreticalclassroomtrainingdrillandsports.Terstewweeksconcentratedongettingtherecruitintop-notchphysicalcondition.48Onehourocalisthenicsbeganat0600.Routemarchesbeganat4AMandwereconductedinullmarchingorder.Tiswasdonetodevelopendurancestaminaandasenseounitcohesion.Itwasalsotoprepareora160-kilometer96mileseriesonightroadmarchesattheendotherstourweeksotraining.Tephysicalnatureothistrainingwassuchthattheexhaustedsoldierswouldallasleepovertheirood.49Sportalsoplayedamajorroleinbasictrainingandwasusedextensivelytopromoteteamworkandhardentherecruits.ourtherthetraineesaggressivespiritboxingwaspartothetraining.Tiswastohelptherecruitsgetovertheearobeinghurt.Italsotaughtthemthatthebestwaytodothiswastogoontheattackandgettheirblowsinrst.Weaponsringreceivedsignicantemphasis.Teconscriptlearnedtoassembleanddisassembletheirpersonalrifeblindolded.Alsotaughtwasarmedcombatbayonetchargesatsandbagsstickgrenadesmortarsandvariouscreativemeansodestroyingtanks.Instructionwasreceivedonbivouackingandeldcraindividualgasprotectionandmessagecarrying.acticstrainingincludedmovingonthegroundunderredigginginadvancingandwithdrawingandassaulttacticsliketheonesusedbyGermanstormtroopersinthelateryearsoWorldWarI.Terewasalsoindoctrinationandpropagandatraining.Tisincludedlecturesonanti-deeatismanti-NazisentimentsandgeneralNationalSocialistPartyideology.50OtherclassesincludedthoseonespionagesecurityandGermanhistory. January-March2013JacksonJournal29couldtellthesecondplatoontosendsomeonetohelpoutthirdplatoontomorrow.Tiscomesacrossasaveryriendlyandreasonabledirectivebutlacksclarity.Secondplatoonwilllikelydispatchanon-commissionedocertothirdplatoonatsomepointduringthedaybutdontbesurprisediheprovestobesomethinglessthanhelpulinhismindheisstillpartosecondplatoondoingaavororthirdplatoon.ContrastthiswiththeclarityprovidedbythecommanderdirectingSecondplatoonplaceonenon-commissionedocerundertheoperationalcontrolOPCONothirdplatoonrom0800tomorrowuntilthecompanyhasclosedbackintothecompanyareatomorrowevening.LettherstsergeantknowtheNCOsnamebeore1600today.Somewilltakeexceptiontothislineoreasoningperhapsarguingthatunitswithdemandingleadersaremorelikelytoexperiencethesenseoisolationanddistrustthanthosewithleadersaremorediplomaticintheirorders.PersonallyIveseennoevidencetosupportthis.Myexperienceisthatleadersatallechelonspreerclearunambiguousordersopenandconsistentexpectationsandasenseocondencethatthecommandermeanswhathesays.Unclearorinconsistentcommunicationencouragessubordinatestoseethemselvesasvictimsincreasesthelikelihoodosel-pityandsetstheconditionsortheemergenceoaunitnarrativethatrunscountertoArmyvalues.Optimisticleadersplacedwellorwardonthebattleeldandcommunicatingwithclarityonlygosoarinstrengtheningaunitsgoodorderanddiscipline.AthirdcriticalingredientisrealisticGoodOrderandDisciplinetraining.Tisrequiresbothastrongwillandconsiderableimaginationromcommanders.EventhestrongestowillsisalmostcertaintobetestedbyjuniorleaderswhowillarguethattheirroleistotrainnewSoldiersnottobetrainedbytheircommandersandrstsergeants.Onlyaveryactiveintellectcansuccessullytrainsubordinateleadersintheverylimitedavailabletimeintheliecycleoabasiccombattrainingcompany.YettheevidenceisclearthatcommanderswhoassumethattheirNCOsareuniversallywellpreparedortheirdutiesasprimarytrainersareinorarudeshock.TeArmydoesanexcellentjobodeliveringtopqualityNCOstoourcompaniesbuttheirabilitytoefectivelytrainnewSoldiersvarieswidely.TeroleothecompanycommanderandrstsergeantistomakeeachNCOasgoodastheycanpossiblybethisrequirestheunittocommittimeandenergytotrainingandcertiyingleadersastrainersaprocessthatisresourceintensiveandcannotbecompletedonthecheap.Whencommandersmakethisinvestmenthoweverthepay-ofisremarkable.NCOswhoarecondentintheirabilitytotrainwithacondencebasedondemonstratedproessionalcompetenceandnotamysticalbelieinthepowerothecampaignhatarenotonlymoreefectivebutalsomuchmoreproudothemselvesandtheirunit.Sharedproessionalcompetencedevelopedthrougharigorousrealistictrainingprogramputsincredibleresilienceintothegoodorderoanorganization.Indevelopingatrainingplanorleadershowevercommanderscannotignoretheneedsotheirjuniorleaders.Cyclingleadersoutoactionorpassesandthecadreresiliencyprogramareimportantaspectsocaringorsubordinateleadersasareinsistingthatleadersvacatethebarracksatareasonablehoursharedutiesequitablyandtakeleaveduringtheappropriateperiods.Asageneralrulecompanycommandersseemtounderstandtheseneedsandtobeaggressiveinmeetingthem.Otherneedshowevergetlessattention.GettingNCOstotheNCOEScoursetheyneedorpromotionrequiringpersonalproessionaldevelopmentensuringthatleadersgetthemedicalattentiontheyneedpromotingdevelopmental
