April-July2014JacksonJournal7SpendingmoneydoesnotatrainedSoldiermakeItisnosurprisetoanyonethattheArmyisoperatinginascalclimatethatisrapidlychangingromthatothepastdecade.OurbudgetisbeingreducedexponentiallywearedownsizingourArmyandbothourcivilianandmilitaryleadershipisstronglyconsideringcuttingpaysalaryandotherbenetsasweseektocreateanArmythatisleanagileandstillwelltrained.TothatendIproposethatcuttingonlytheliveportionoM67trainingromtheBCTPOImeetstheintentotrainingSoldiersonacrucialskillwhilesavingmoneythatcouldbebetterutilizedtoimprovetrainingacilitiesandequipmentwhilealsosavingtheArmyanuntoldamountomoneyinpaymedicalexpensesandthecostoArmsAmmunitionandExplosivesAAE.CurrentlyaM67costs59.71pergrenade.Whilethisdoesnotseemlikeacostlyexpenseconsiderthatbetween01January2013and01January2014FortJacksontrained41675personnelonliveM67s.SinceeverytraineethrowstwoM67grenadesduringlivetrainingwespent4976829incostsoAAEalonenotincludingthecostoextragrenadesthrowntoaccountorduds.Additionallywehaveapproximately15InantrymanworkingascadreunderB4-10INatRemagenliverange.EachoneothoseSoldiersrightullyreceivesDemolitionPayo250dollarspermonthaswelltheirbasepayBAHTRICAREcoverageetc.GiventhatourArmyisreducinginsizeitmakesmuchmoresensetoreduceourpersonnelneedsandallowthose11BstobeutilizedsomewhereelseinFORSCOMorTRADOC.FurthermoreseveralothosecadremembershavereceivedtheSoldiersMedalSMortheiractionsinsavinglivesintheperormanceotheirdutiesatRemagen.WithouttakingawayromtheabsoluteselfessnessandcourageotheiractionsbeingawardedtheSMrightullycarrieswithita10increaseinretirementpayanothercostthatwemustconsideriwearetohonestlyandobjectivelyconductananalysisothecostothistraining. 8JacksonJournalApril-July2014TeArmycouldsavetensomillionsodollarsiweretainonlythepracticequalicationportionohandgrenadetraining.AM228practiceuzecostsonly9.97peruze.SincetraineesalreadyutilizethistrainingaidduringtheirqualicationtrainingthedaypriortothrowingliveM67sandalltrainingacilitiesinrastructurealreadyexistthiswouldnotcountasamonetarytradeo.Sincethecostotrainingwithsimulationsis831000theArmywouldexperienceareductiono85otrainingcostsinAAEalone.DrillSergeantscancontinuetotrainontheskillsrequiredtoproperlyemployahandgrenadecommanderscanusethatmoneyorotherpurposesandtheArmycanuseitspersonnelmoreefciently.AninjuredSoldierisneveragoodthinganeedlesslyinjuredSoldierisatragedyAnyonecantellyouthathandlinggrenadesisaninherentlyriskyanddangerousthingtodo.Teexplosivescanbecomeunstableuzescanbeshorterthananticipatedandshrapnelcanseriouslyinjurebystanders.Allotheaboverisksexistregardlessothelevelotrainingthethrowermayhavebutitbecomesevenmorehazardouswhenyouconsiderthat100othethrowershereatFortJacksonhaveneverhandledgrenadesbeorearenotyetconsideredtobeullydisciplinedSoldiersandhavebeenimmersedoranextendedtimeinanenvironmentthatinduceshighlevelsostress.Teseactorscombinetocreateaveritablerecipeordisaster.IyouweretointerviewthecadreatRemagenRangeeveryoneothemwouldhaveanear-missstorytotell.Whenyouaredealingwithhandgrenadesevenaclosecallhasaveryrealpotentialorsevereinjuries.Withinthepastyearcadrehavesavedthelivesotraineesonthreeseparateoccasionsandtakendirectactiontomitigatetrainingincidentserrantthrowscookosanddanger-closedetonationsatleast15times.Eachoneotheseincidentsdidnottakeaturnortheworstbecauseoourcadremembersdedicationtotheirdutiestheirdisciplineandtheirattentiontodetail.Stilljustbecausenoonehasbeenseverelyinjuredyetdoesnotmeanitwillnothappen.Withover50otheArmystraineescomingthroughFortJacksonannuallyitisonlyamatterotimebeoreourcadrearenotquickenoughtopreventanaccident.Notonlydoestheimmediateblastoahandgrenadehaveapotentialorinjurytheshockwavescancauseconsiderabledamageaswell.LookingatthephotooBay03oRemagenaconsiderablebowedeecttothewoodenslatingonthebermwallsisnoticeable.Furthermorethedirtbermsarepackedextremelytight.Tisisnotbydesign.Astimegoesontherepeatedconcussiveorceothedetonationscausethewoodtopermanentlywarpandthedirttobepackeddowntoadensitythatresemblesconcrete.Itheconcussiveorcesorepeateddetonationcancausethatkindochangeinregularmaterialswhatishappeningtothe April-July2014JacksonJournal9bodiesothecadrewhorepeatedlydayinanddayoutstandinsidethatpitwithtraineestosupervisethethrowingoalivegrenadeManyotheinjuriesweseeinourcadrewhoacilitatethistrainingareinlinewithailmentstheArmyjustbegantolearnaboutasweacedthedangersoIEDsandEFPs.Non-visualinjuriesthatcantakemonthstosuraceandaredifculttodiagnose-MildraumaticBrainInjuriesmBImemorylossandPostraumaticStressDisordercausedbyrepeatedlywitnessingortakingpartinactiondrillstopreventexplosivesrominjuringorkillingothers.Toseareallinjuriesromasingularincidentbutwealsoneedtoconsiderthelongtermdamagethatcanbecausedbyrepeatedexposuretoblasts.MedicalresearchInsllingCombatSkillsconsistentlyshowsalinkbetweenindividualswhosustainconsistentandcontinuingsub-concussivebraintraumaanddegenerativediseasessuchasChronicraumaticEncephalopathyCE.Terecanbeadangerinbeingsorisk-adversethatyouoverlooktheneedororareunwillingtoaccepttheinherentrisksoatrainingprogramthatultimatelycarriesabenethigherthanthatothecostotraining.Idontbelievethisisthecasewithlivehandgrenadetraining.Againiwecontinuedthetrainingutilizingonlypracticeuzeswecouldcontinuetomeettheintentotrainingwithminimalrisksandmuchlessoawindoworinjuriesbothshorttermandlongtermwithregardstobothtraineesandcadre.WhyherewhynowHandgrenadeshaveexistedsincethe10thcenturywhentheEasternRomanempiresusedrelledpotsthatwouldbethrownatenemies.TeUnionandConederateArmiesotheCivilWarusedormsotheKetchumgrenadeincombatandtheUSArmyhasutilizedgrenadesduringeveryWarandinvariousormsromanti-personneltoincendiarysince.TehandgrenadeisaninvaluabletoolinclosecombatandeverySoldiershouldbecapableoemployinggrenadestokillanenemyragmentationanti-tankprovideconcealmentsmokeordestroyenemyequipmentorriendlyequipmentorthepurposesosaeguardingtechnologicalsecretsortopreventtheenemyromusingequipmentagainstusphosphorous.ButBCdoesnotincludehandsontrainingoranyothegrenadesotherthanragmentation.CommandersothegraduatingSoldiersollowonduty-stationdecidewhethertoconductthattraining.TisisbecausetheleadershipotheunittowhichthatSoldierisgoingknowsbetterthanwedothenecessityorthistypeotrainingbasedontheirMissionEssentialaskListMELandcanbettertailortheirtrainingtomatchtheindividualskills 10JacksonJournalApril-July2014requiredtobeprocientintheunitsMEL.OnlyanincrediblysmallpercentageotheSoldierswhogothroughBCenduputilizinggrenadesincombatandthosethatdoaregenerallycombatarmsSoldierswhomakeupasmallpercentageotheArmycomparedtocombatsupportandcombatservicesupportbranches.Teintentionisnottosuggestthatnoncombat-armsSoldiersrequirenotrainingonhandgrenades.EveryoneshouldknowhowtoemployahandgrenadebutthedecisiontotrainonemploymentogrenadesutilizingLIVEexplosivesshouldbeadecisionmadebytheunittowhichtheSoldierispermanentlyassigned.TatcommandknowstheirassignedmissionandcanmoreefectivelyperormtheMilitaryDecisionMakingProcessandArmyrainingManagementtodeterminewhetherurthertrainingonhandgrenadesisneededtoensuremissionsuccess.LeadersonrangesoccasionallyvoicetheargumentthattrainingonliveexplosivesishistoricallybasedandthatBChasalwaystrainedonit.Whilethereissomevaliditytocontinuingtotrainonaspecictaskattimesitdoesnothurttoregularlyassesstheneedorsaidtraining.Becauseitsbeendonebeoredoesnotmeanthatitmustcontinueintheaceoobsolescence.AgoodexampleothiscanbeoundintheM72LAWwhichsawheavyuseinVietnamandwasincorporatedintoBCbutseeslittleusenow.WhiletheLAWhasseenactioninaewbattlesinIraqandAghanistanitsusehasbeenverylimitedandsohasnotbeenincludedinBCsincethe1980s.Itisalsobelievedthatthetrainingincreasesattentiontodetaildisciplineandcondenceinthetask.Certainlywedesirethesequalitiesduringthetrainingbutthetrainingdoesnotinstillthesequalities.InactromahistoricalstandpointtheArmydidnotusegrenadesasatrainingtooluntilrelativelyrecentlyandtheocushasneverbeenondisciplineandattentiontodetail.WhenBaronvonSteubenwaschargedwithassistinginthecreationoadisciplinedArmyhedevelopeddrillmovementsandregulationsorWashingtonsArmyin1778.HedidnotocusonhandgrenadetrainingandyetstillcreatedtheoundationsthatweusetodaytocreateaproessionaldisciplinedSoldier.Disciplineisinstilledthroughconstantlytrainingtroopstheproperwaytocarryoutataskencouragingthemtobettertheirabilityatcarryingthetaskoutandprovidingeedbackinaconsistentmanner.Whatitisnotisasingulartrainingevent.IatraineeisnotdisplayinganappropriatedegreeodisciplinepriortothrowingalivehandgrenadeperormingthatactwillnotmagicallychangethelevelodisciplinedisplayedbythatSoldier.AvalidargumentcanbemadebystatingthatthiseventisthesingularpointduringtheSoldiersentiretraininginwhichtheyaceimminentdangerandmustaceitheadon.Tereisundoubtedlyanintangibletrainingbenettothiseventthatmeritsadialoguebutwemustconsidertheworthotherisk.Trowingalivegrenadedoesnotguaranteeanincreaseincondenceinselorequipmentanditmayeveninstillalsecondence.CondencecanbebuiltbyacingearsandovercomingthemcaseinpointVictoryowerbutdoesthebenetopossiblyboostingcondenceoutweightherisksthatareassociatedwithlivehandgrenadesASoldiermaywalkinemploythehandgrenadepoorlybutinamannerthatdoesnotinjureanyonewithintheprotectiveconnesothelivebayandnowalselybelievetheyareprocientintheemploymentothatweaponwhichisextremelydangerous.AchangeintherainingSupportPackageSPtoallowormorepracticeuzesandDrillSergeantdriveninstructioninthrowingagrenadewouldmeettheintentothetrainingwithsubstantiallylessrisktothetraineeandthetrainer.Anadditionaloptiontoconsiderwouldbeallowing1-2othetoptraineestothrowlivegrenadeswiththerestothecompanywatchingthiswouldstillalloweveryonetoamiliarizethemselveswiththeimpactotheweaponwhilereducingAAEcosts.SimilaramiliarizationtrainingisalreadyconductedwithboththeM203andA-4weaponssystemsduringUSWeaponsFamiliarization.Wemustlookathowweareteachingtheseskillsandwhyiwearenotmakingtheabsolutebesttrainingavailablewiththeresourcesthatwearegivenandiwearenotconductingthistraininginamannerthatpreservesthesaetyandwelareothetraineeandthetrainerweareailing 12JacksonJournalApril-July2014WeallhaveheardthesesayingsbeoreandallousasleaderstrytolivebytheseaxiomswhenleadingourSoldiers.Asleadersweshouldstriverelentlesslytonotonlymaketheseaxiomsarealitybutweshouldalsoseekwaystomaketrainingbetter.AsaCompanyCom-manderIhavespentcountlesshourswithmyDrillSergeantsatrangeswithnewlyarrivedraineesduringBasicRifeMarksmanshipBRMperiods4-10.BRMperiod4istypicallythemostrustratingtimeorDrillSergeantsaswehavelearnedromapreviousarticleentitledZeroingtheUnzero-ablebySSGChadA.Sage.DaysatBRMperiod4arelongandarduousandsometimeswithlittlerewardorlittlegraticationatdaysend.IhavewatchedmanyDrillSergeantswalkromtheringpointtothetargetandbacknumeroustimestoanalyzeandassesstheWarriorsring.Whatcausesthisrustrationoreelingolittlerewardeach-ingcorrectsightalignmentandsightpictureisthecause.oachieveacorrectsightpicturetheraineemustaligntherearsightposttherontsightpostandthetarget.Sightalignmentiscenteringthetipotherontsightpostinthecenterotherearsightaperture.Anyalignmenterrorswillcausethetargettobemissed.Right8down6orle3up3areamiliarsoundscomingromDrillSergeants.Tesearethecorrectionsthatarebeinggiventoadjustthepointoimpactotheroundonthetargettoachieveahitorascore.Tesearethesamestan-dardsandmethodsIwastaughtasaraineenearly22yearsago.HasnothingchangedinourweaponryinoursystemsinourtechnologiesorinourtacticsoanswertheabovequestionnoourArmyhaschangedandisconstantlychanging.TeArmycontinuestointroducenewweaponssystemstoenhanceouroverallreadinessbyprovidingourSoldierswiththemostadvanceweaponrygivingusadistinctadvantageonthebattleeld.In2000theArmyintroducedtheM68SightRefexandwasdesignatedaCloseCombatOpticCCO.TeM68canbeusedonboththeM16andM4rifesandsinceitsintroductiontheArmyhaseldedover1000000M68s.odayBCcompaniesusetra-ditionalironsightsthroughoutBasicRifeMarks-manshipbuttheyshouldnolongerinsteadtheyshouldusetheM68amoreecientmorecosteectiveandmoretruetothemoderndaybattle-eldsight.RecentlymycompanyparticipatedinastudythatcomparedtheeectivenessandeciencyotheM68CCOversustheIronsightandsobeganthestudyoLegacyCompaniesvs.ContemporaryCompanies.TethreecontemporarycompanieswereequippedromthebeginningothecyclewiththeM68andthethreelegacycompanieswereequippedwithstandardaperturesights.AtthestartoBRM4IwasverynervouswiththeusageotheM68orreasonssuchasequipmentmalunctionsandraineesjustnotgraspingtheopticasquickly.IutilizedthreedaysoBRM4twodaysconsistingotwoplatoonsatthezerorangeandtwoplatoonsinthecompanyareaconductingBRMreinorcementtraining.Tethirddaywasutilizedorourhardcoreswhichisusuallyanestimated30to35rain-Traintostandard.Trainasyoufght.Trainingmustbetoughrealisticandchallenging.BRMTrainingwiththeM68ABeerWay-MoreEfecveandEcientCPTKennethL.Johnson 46JacksonJournalApril-July2014TehistoryotheUnitedStatesislledwithstoriesomilitarybattlesconfictsandall-outwar.TenationwasinactoundedasaresultotheRevolutionaryWarwheretheoriginalcoloniesthathadbeenestablishedbyGreatBritaindecidedthattheynolongerwantedtobeunderBritishruleandchosetoormtheirownnewnation.IntheearliestdaysotheU.S.themilitarywasahaphazardandpoorlyorganizedsystem.TemembersotherstU.S.militaryorceswerearmerslaborersandothercolonistswhochosetocometogethertoghttheBritishandclaimthislandastheirown.LettersromGeorgeWashingtonwritteninthisperiodshowthathebelievedtheU.S.shouldhaveitsownArmedForcesWood1917thoughitwassometimebeoretheoriginalstatesagreedthathavingtheirownindividualmilitiaorceswasnotthebestwaytodeendthenation.Muchhaschangedsincethe18thcenturyandtheU.Snowhasthemostpowerulmilitaryorceontheplanet.OneothemostimportantunctionsintheArmedForcesisthetrainingonewrecruitsandtheDrillInstructorsDrillSergeantsandothermilitarymemberswhoareresponsibleortrainingtheserecruitsmustmeetthehigheststandardsoproessionalisminordertoensurethattheU.S.ArmedForcesremainpreparedtomeetthedemandsandchallengesothe21stcentury.rainingrecruitsortheirrolesintheArmedForceshasbeenaprimaryconcernormilitarycommandersthroughouthistory.Inthe18thand19thcenturyastheU.S.wasgrowingintotheSSGJessicaBrooksDisciplineandOrderintheU.S.ArmedForcespowerulnationitwouldbecomethenationdevelopedamulti-prongedmilitarysystemwhichwouldeventuallybecomethevebrancheswehavetodaytheArmyNavyAirForceMarineCorpsandCoastGuard.BeorethesevebranchesothemilitarywereestablishedhowevertheprimarymeansbywhichtheU.S.preparedorandoughtmilitaryconfictswaswithamilitiasystemChambersAnderson1999.TeoriginalstateseachhadtheirownmilitiasastheleadersothesestateswereconcernedthatanationalArmedForcescouldgrowtobetoopowerulandcouldthreatenthesovereigntyandreedomotheindividualstates.MembershipinthesemilitiaswassometimesvoluntarywhileatothertimesmilitiaorceswereconscripteddraedintoserviceChambersAnderson.Bythe20thcenturythenationalArmedForcesweretransormingintothevebranchesweknowtodayandtherolesothestatemilitiashadbeenlargelytakenoverbythenationalArmedForces.rainingorecruitswasmoreormalandregimentedthanithadbeeninthedaysoGeorgeWashingtonwhenrecruitswerehandedgunsitheydidnothavetheirownandtoldtopreparetoghtChambersAnderson.TeU.S.ArmyandtheU.S.MarineCorpsinparticularhaddevelopedstandardizedtrainingprogramstopreparerecruitsorcombatandtheirotherrolesintheArmedForces.ItwasduringthisperiodthatthepositionsoDrillInstructorandDrillSergeantasweknowthemtodaywerebeginningtotakeshapeandTheRoleofMilitaryInstructorsintheArmyNavyAirForceandMarineCorps April-July2014JacksonJournal47DisciplineandOrdernewrecruitsallwentthroughthesameormsobasictrainingandbootcamptoensurethateachwerepreparedandeducatedinthesamemanner.ConditionsinbootcampsandbasictrainingsystemsweredicultandchallenginganditwastheroleotheDrillInstructorstoensurethateachrecruitwasmentallyandphysicallypreparedorcombatshouldtheneedarise.WhentheU.S.enteredWorldWarIIinthe1940stheU.S.militarydidnothaveenoughSoldierstoadequatelymaintainadominantpositioninthevariouscombattheatersoEuropeandthePacicIslandsChambersAnderson.ItbecamenecessarytoestablishadrafinordertogrowtheranksotheArmedForcesandwiththetensothousandsonewmembersothemilitaryitwasalsonecessarytoensurethattheywereadequatelytrainedandpreparedorwar.WhilethevariousbranchesotheArmedForceshavealwayshadtrainingprogramsandmemberswhowereresponsibleoradministeringtrainingtorecruitsitwasduringthisperiodthattherolesoDrillInstructorandDrillSergeantthatwethinkotodaywereinitiallyestablished.TetaskotrainingnewrecruitsisoneothemostimportantresponsibilitiesthatthemilitarycanbestowuponitsmembersasitisofenthistrainingthatwilldeterminewhetheraSoldierwillliveordieandwhetherheorshewillbepreparedorandcapableodeendingthenation.Withthisgreatresponsibilitytorecruitsalsocomestheresponsibilitytomaintainthehigheststandardsoproessionalism.TisresponsibilitytomaintainthehigheststandardshasbecomeevenmoresignicantinrecentdecadesaswomenhavebeenallowedtoentertheArmedForces.TeU.S.SecretaryoDeenserecentlyannouncedthatwomenwillnowbeallowedtoassumecombatpositionsintheArmedForces.TisisanotablechangeintheU.S.militaryspositionbutmanyotheconsiderationsrelatedtohavingwomenintheArmedForceshavealreadybeenaactorordecades.OneotheprimaryconcernsormilitaryleaderswherethisisconcernedhasbeenocoursethepossibilityoproblemsarisingrelatedtointeractionsbetweenmaleandemalemembersothemilitaryNelson2002.Concernsaboutraternizationsexualharassmentandevensexualassaulthaveallbeenimportantconsiderationswhereitcomestoestablishingmilitarypolicy.EveryaspectomilitaryliesuchasthetrainingonewrecruitsthehousingoSoldiersandothermembersotheArmedForcesthedecisionsrelatedtoassigningtasksandresponsibilitiestomalesandemalesandeveryotherdecisionthatmilitaryleadersmustmakeareaectedbytheinclusionoemalesintheArmedForcesSieg1997.Nowmorethaneveritisincumbentuponmilitaryleadersandthoseresponsibleortrainingrecruitstoestablishandadheretothehigheststandardsoproessionalismatalllevelsandatalltimes.ItisnotanexaggerationtosaythatDrillInstructorsholdthelivesonewrecruitsintheirhands.ASoldierorMarinewhoisnotadequatelypreparedormilitaryliemayendangerhimorherselandmayalsoputthelivesoothersatrisk.EvenduringtrainingDrillSergeantsmustassumetheutmostcareortheirrecruitsastrainingcanbeverydicultandevendangerous.DrillSergeantsmustpushtheirrecruitstotheirlimitstoensurethattheyarepreparedorreal-liecombatsituationsthatwilltesttheselimitsbutatthesametimeitisnecessaryorDrillSergeantstoensurethattheirrecruitsaresaeandthattheconditionsotheirtrainingarechallengingwithoutbeingactuallyharmulanddangerous.Inmostinstancesthisisexactlywhathappensduringtrainingasrecruitsarechallengedtopushthemselvesasarastheycan.Insomeinstanceshoweverthingscangoverywrongandwhentheydothelivesorecruitscanbeatrisk.InAprilo1956anincidentoccurredattheMarineCorpstrainingcampatParrisIslandSouthCarolinathatcostthelivesoanumberoyoungrecruits.TisincidentwasclassiedasatrainingaccidentthoughitwasclearlytheresponsibilityotheDrillInstructortoavoidsuchaccidentsandtheafermathotheincidenthadsignicantconsequencesortheMarineCorpsandorthosewhoknewandlovedtherecruitswhodiedduring 48JacksonJournalApril-July2014training.DrillInstructorMatthewMcKeonwasinchargeotrainingthenewrecruitsinPlatoon71andhewashavingsomedicultygettingsomemembersotheplatoontomaintaintheproperdisciplineandbehaviorthatwasexpectedorecruitsStevens1999.McKeonwasayoungmanatthetimeandhadonlycompletedhisDrillInstructortrainingaewmonthsearlier.Platoon71washisrstbatchorecruitssincecompletinghistrainingandhewantedtodemonstratetohissuperiorocersthathewasuptothetaskobeingaDrillInstructor.ItwasapparentnotjusttoMcKeonbutalsotomanyohisellowinstructorsthatsomeohisrecruitswerenotproperlydisciplinedandMcKeondecidedtopushthemtotheirlimitstomakeitclearthathewasinchargeandthatheexpectedthemtoallinlineStevens.OnthenightoApril81956McKeonassembledhisplatoonandtoldthemthattheyweregoingonamarchintotheswampsthatborderedpartotheParrisIslandbase.HejokedwiththerecruitsthattheyhadbetterbepreparedtoswimandthatthosewhocouldnotswimwouldprobablydrownwhilethosewhocouldswimwouldprobablybeeatenbysharksStevens.TeswampsaroundParrisIslandwereprimarilyreshwaterandbrackishwaterbuttheydideedintotheAtlanticOceananditwastruethatsharksandothersealieoccasionallymadetheirwayintothedeepestpartsotheswamp.AlthoughitwashighlyunlikelythatthemarchingrecruitswouldencounteranysharksduringtheirmarchintotheswampMcKeonswarningdidhelptoreinorcethepointthattheconditionstheywouldaceontheirexcursionwerepotentiallydangerous.TerewereinactseveralmembersotheplatoonthatwereunabletoswimthoughtherecordsandinvestigativereportsconductedafertheincidentseemedtodemonstratethatMcKeonwasunawareothiswhenhesetoutonthemarchStevens.ItisdiculttosayorsurewhetherMcKeonwouldnothavesenttherecruitsonthemarchhadheknownthatsomeothemcouldnotswimbuttheinvestigationdidatleastseemtoprovethathehadnotpurposeullysentthosewhocouldnotswimintothedeepchillywatersotheswamp.SergeantMcKeonhadonlybeenstationedatParrisIslandorashortwhilehehadcompletedhisDrillInstructortrainingatadierentMarineCorpsacilityandhadbeentranserredtoParrisIslandonlyaewweeksbeorehewasgivenhisrstplatoononewrecruits.McKeonhadgrownupinNewHampshireandhewasunamiliarwithmanyothegeographicalandclimateconditionsoSouthCarolina.McKeonwasacapableswimmerandhewascondentthathecouldleadhisrecruitsintotheswampsaely.Itwashisintentiontomarchthemintothewateruntiltheywereaboutwaist-deepandkeeptheminthewaterjustlongenoughtoensurethattheywerecoldandmiserablebeoreleadingthembackoutagainStevens.WhatMcKeondidnotknowbecausehewasunamiliarwiththeconditionsintheregionwasthatthebottomotheswampwascoveredwithoozingstickymudthatwassometimesquitedeep.Itwasentirelypossibletogetstuckinthismudandtothensinkdownintoit.BecauseitwassodarkbythetimethemenwereledintotheswampMcKeoncouldnotseemostotherecruitsastheymarched.Teonlywayinwhichhecouldcommunicatewiththemandtheonlywaytheycouldcommunicatewithhimwasbyyellingbackandorthtoeachother.BecauseitwascleartotherecruitsthatMcKeonwasunhappywiththeperormanceoseveralmembersotheplatoonmostothemchosetoremainsilentastheymarched.ItwaslaterreportedbythosewhosurvivedtheeventthatmanyothemwerequitescaredbythecircumstancesbuttheywerealsoscaredoMcKeonandmostchosenottospeakupevenasconditionsaroundthembegantogetuncomortableStevens.AferalliMcKeonwasangryenoughtopunishthemwiththismarchwhatwouldhedotothosewhocomplainedaboutitMuchowhatisknownabouttheeventsoApril81956hascomeromtheinterviewsandinvestigationsthatwereconductedaferwards.MostotheevidencecontainedintheinvestigativereportsseemstosupporttheideathatMcKeondidnotpurposeullyendangerthelivesohisrecruitsanditwassimplyamatterounortunateandunknowncircumstancesthatledtothetragedyStevens.Amongthosewhosurvivedwereseveralmembersotheplatoonwhowereunabletoswimandintheirinterviewsafertheincidenttheyalldescribedasimilarsequenceoevents.AccordingtothebulkothetestimonyMcKeonwasattherontotheplatoonleadingthemarch.AssomeotherecruitsneartheendothegroupbegantoexperiencetroublesuchasgettingstuckinandsinkingintothedeepmudintheswampMcKeonwasunawarethattheywerehavingdiculty.Itwassodarkthatsomeotherecruitswereabletosneakawayromthemainpackandmaneuverclosertotheedgeotheswampclosesttodryland.Othersitseemsbecamedisorientedinthedark April-July2014JacksonJournal49DisciplineandOrderconditionsandalsosplitromthemaingroupbutheadedawayromland.Becausethewaterwasdeeperinsomepartsandshallowerinothersitwasimpossibleortherecruitstodetermineitheyweremovingclosertoshoresimplybyjudgingthedepthothewater.SomemembersotheplatoonreportedlaterthattheythoughttheyweremovingclosertolandbecausethewaterwasgrowingshallowerwhiletheywereinactheadingdeeperintotheswampStevens.Compoundingtheproblemsthatsomeotherecruitswereexperiencingwastheactthatthetideshifedwhiletheywereintheswamp.Althoughtheyweresurroundedbygrassesreedsmudandtheotherconditionsnormallyoundinswamplandtheywereactuallyquiteclosetotheocean.Asthetidebegantogooutthewaterbegantorushromtheswampbacktotheoceancreatinghazardousundertowsthatwereworseinthedeeperpartsotheswamp.Astheundertowbegantopullatsomeotherecruitsthoseontheouteredgeothemarchingcolumnoundthemselvesslippingintomuchdeeperwater.Tesemenhadcometoapointwherethebottomotheswampdroppedromaeweettooverteneetdeep.TosetotheothersideothecolumnandthoseattherontwhohadalreadychangeddirectionastheyollowedMcKeonhadnoideathatthesedepthchangesexistedandinthedarknessitwasimpossibleorMcKeontoseewhatwashappeningattherearothecolumn.McKeonandtherecruitsthatweredirectlybehindhimwerealreadymarchingbacktowardsdrylandwhileatthesametimesomeothoserecruitsattherearothecolumnwerebecomingstuckinthemudorbeingsweptunderbytherushingcurrentotheshifingtide.Astheconditionsintheswampsuddenlygrewverydangerousseveralothemenbegantocryoutinpanicandear.ForamomentMcKeonandsomeotherecruitsneartherontothecolumnthoughttheyellingwasjustthesoundohorseplaybuttheyquicklyrealizedthattherewasaseriousproblem.ToseneartherontothecolumnincludingMcKeonturnedbacktoassisttherecruitswhowerestrugglinginthemudandwater.Tosewhocouldswimwadedintothedeeperwatertotrytopullthosewhowerestrugglingtosaetyandaewoundthemselvesbeingpulledunderbyotherswhowereincapableoswimmingorwerebeingsweptoutbytheundertow.Teworstothecircumstanceswereoverinjustminutesbutthatwasenoughtimeorseveralotherecruitstodrown.WhenMcKeonrstledtherecruitsoutintotheswamptherewereseventy-ourmeninPlatoon71.Whentheyreturnedtherewereonlysixty-eightmensixofthemdrownedinthechillymuddywaters.SergeantMcKeonwascourt-martialedortheincidentchargedormanslaughter.ManyohisellowocerstestiedonbehaloMcKeonduringhiscourt-martialinsistingthathewasrightortryingtodisciplinehistroublesomerecruitsandalsoassertingthattrainingatnightandtraininginswampswasnecessaryandproperStevens.EvensomeotherecruitswhoweremembersoPlatoon71testiedonbehaloMcKeontellingthecourtthattheyadmiredandrespectedMcKeonandthathehadintheirviewdonenothingwrong.IntheendMcKeonwasconvictedolesserchargesalthoughhespenttimeincustodyandhadhisrankreducedtoPrivateMcKeonremainedintheMarineCorpsorseveralmoreyearsbeorereceivingamedicaldischarge.WhileMarineCorpstrainingandtraininginallbranchesothemilitaryissupposedtobechallenginganddicultincidentssuchastheRibbonCreektragedyarenotcommon.Foreverystoryaboutsomethingdangerousoreventragichappeninginbasictrainingtherearemanymorethatdescribetrainingasextraordinarilychallengingbutultimatelyrewarding.InthebookOnceaMarineCollectedStoriesbyEnlistedMarineCorpsVietnamVeteranstheeditorscompileanumberotalesrecountingtheexperiencesthatMarineshadwhileundergoingtrainingandlaterservingincombat.AccordingtooneMarinenoneotheotherArmedServicesdoesrecruittrainingbetterthantheMarineCorpsLatting2005.
